3" or 3.5"
« on: May 08, 2005, 02:03:34 PM »
I'm looking to get a Remington Wingmaster. It will be for everything including small game, varmints, turkeys and deer. Which would be more useful 3" or 3.5".I am thinking that the extra 1/2 inch might be a little slower in cycling the action.

I would go with a 3 inch if turkeys are on the menu, otherwise even the 2-3/4" would be fine for most other purposes. The 3-1/2" was invented for waterfowl hunting, and would not even exist if it weren't for the crappy ballistics of steel shot.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Again, Ramrod nails it. :D

the 3 1/2" is worth it for turkeys but the longer stroke isn't worth it for a multi-purpose gun.  you'll find you short shuck it more often and it shoots slower.  for a multipurpose gun get the 3" and you'll be fine.  if you ever want to get a specific turkey gun then you can get a 3 1/2".

concentrate more on hunting than shooting and use whatever your comfortable with. never use equipment to compensate for skill.

Submitted w/ respect. Not singling anyone out. This is just my philosiphy toward hunting.

Absolutely correct.  I said roughly the same thing here:http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=57266&highlight=

I usually hunt several times a year in Highlands county SE of Sebring and I can't think of a time when a 3 inch 12 ga would not take care of anything that I was hunting.  The bear signs along Hwy 27 are for real, and I still feel safe with a good old 1955 Remington, 2 3/4 inch 870 Wingmaster that my Dad bought me new. Good place to Turkey hunt.

Well Dragon, if you're hunting in that area I hope you're using a Tom Gaskins turkey call since you're in his back yard.

Have you ever heard of Tom?

Rusty..........I got out of the army at Homestead AFB back in the seventies......worked in south FL in the early 80's.......the duck hunting was great around Kissame and Okachobie..........

I've never owned a 3" or 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge, always found the 2 3/4" would do anything I wanted to do if I did my part........

Certainly the 3" and 3 1/2 inch will put more shot in the air........but, the price of the shell is very high, and the recoil is not near as comfortable as the 2 3/4............. the actions are longer so usually slower......and less reliable....

Bigger isn't always better........seems the trend these days is to get the latest, biggest whizbanger going...........then take the beating shooting it.......fact is........in almost all situations, the old tried and true will do the job just as well, more comfortably, and usually cheaper.........

The only time I use a 3.5" gun is when I am waterfowl hunting WITHOUT a dog.  I want to hit them with as much shot as I can so I don't lose any birds or have to chase them far.  I want them DRT, dead right there.  When I hunt with a dog, I use 2 3/4"s alot and even use a 3" 20ga.

I don't know who that Neal fella is.  I picked up that term in a book about snipers in Viet Nam.  Seems to apply to hunting situations as well.

Neal Boortz is a nationally syndicated talk show host who has been on the radio for about 30 years. He's syndicated out of Atlanta on a Cox broadcasting station. Look up his web page at www.boortz.com. He's not a Republican cheerleader like some of them out there, in fact he a registered libertarian.
