I did it, too.  I ordered a 25.06.  I don't need it but I have never owned a 25.06.  I thought this would be a cheap place to start.

I am also leaning towards the Stevens 200 in .270. I am a little hesitant as I am so use to my old, now gone Remington 700`s as they were tack drivers. Hell, even if it is 90% as accurate, I am in!! I would just get a Savage, but I can`t stand the Accutrigger-ick :? Jack.

I am going to find someone around my parts that carries the 200 and handle it. If I like it, I will get it :D At that price, I would bet Wal-Mart will be all over this gun very shortly. It seams like it is a Savage, minus the Accutrigger. Jack.

$268 and change was the quote I was given. They get their guns here:

www.internetguncatalog.com

Look under Savage first and then the bottom gun will be a Stevens 200. Go there and follow the link to the full Stevens 200 line and it's availability.

Right now the only one they don't have in stock is the 300 Win Mag. I looked at one of these a couple weeks ago at a dealer's and unless you're into heavy hitters, better stay away from the 30 cals or the Mags. The stock has a hard rubber recoil pad like the Weatherby Vanguards do.

Yes, I see, they really skimp on the butt pad  I don`t think with a .270 it will matter all that much, but I can see where a full powered .30/06 or larger it would!!  Jack.

So, if Walmart is not dealing in these except for the 300 Win Mag, where are you guys buying these and what kind of prices are you paying?

I'm guessing that .270 and that .308 will tag you guys pretty good. May be a surprise tho    and not thump on your shoulders too bad. I have a 30-06 vanguard that is a kitten with the factory 150 and 165 gr. loads but will rattle your teeth with some 165 and 190 gr. handloads I tried. I assume Savage is trying to appeal to the run-of-the-mill, once or twice a year hunter that wouldn't even think about handloading and so in that aspect they should be pretty tame as far as recoil goes. Handloads that are not in the max ranges should be fine too.
Can't hardly wait for the range reports to start coming in form you guys that have bought these. Some of the shooters over at Savageshooters.com have already been posting some pretty impressive results with 'em.

It's certainly nice to hear that someone makes a rifle that shoots under MOA for under $300.

Hmm.  I might have to give these a second look.  I had thought they were using long actions (& mag spacers where necessary) for everything. :)
