new 7,62x25 ammo
« on: April 26, 2005, 02:00:34 PM »
I'm hoping that Wolf manufactures new 7,62x25 ammo as good as their 9mm is too.  Their 9mm is cheap and it shoots great.  Someone has to manufacturer new 7,62x25 ammo soon i hope!             BigBill

I just want some cheap berdan primed stuff i can shoot and walk away from the empty cases, no i don't want the corrosive yugo surplus stuff!!!  I just put brand new barrels in my Tokarev's.

Sellier and Bellot has made new ammo for a long time...I don't know why you would need Berdan primed.....The S&B ammo is boxer primed reloadable brass.  But just because it IS reloadable...dosen't mean YOU have to.  S&B is 8 or 9 dollars for a box of 50..and I would rather put brass through ANY firearm.  At that price...if you want to let the shells lie where they fall...that is your choice.

WOLF does make 7.62x25 but it cannot be imported to USA for some odd reason due to BATF idiotic rules.

I read that the S&B 7,62x25 has crono'ed all different none of the rounds were the same so it sounds like S&B has some quality problems.  I have about 20 boxes of new S&B 7,62x25 ammo.  I'd rather see some cheaper Wolf 7,62x25 even if its berdan primed so i don't have to reload. BigBill

I have found and heard that the FNM 7,62x25 is good quality stuff.  I would stay away from Winchester Metric 7,62x25 ammo too because its really S&B in a winchester box.

For carry ammo I will reload my own then i'm sure of what i have.

I've wanted to play with the 7.62 for accuracy purposes for a while and got myself a 7.62x25mm chamber insert for a 30-06 from MCA sports in Anchorage, Alaska.  The insert fits perfectly into my 06 chamber and ejects properly.

I tried S&B ball and some of the new FNM 7.62 85 gn hollow-points and both grouped within an inch at 25m.  Most of the variation was mine in trying to hold the scope steady, but all that stuff is accurate from my Winchester M70.

The stuff that is not accurate is the old mil-surp ball from China or Chechoslovakia or other eastern european countries.

My 7.62 Tok is accurate enough for a pistol but I wouldn't want to try and take a hunting shot with it but when shot from my 06, I get good enough groups fer varmits or other critters that size.  HTH.  Mikey.

Guys, one link is www.mcace.com.  That gets you to the MCA Sports website where you can view their offerings.  Another site at lilred@ak.net will get you to the owner.

I felt pretty good about the accuracy I got from those inserts in my 06.  I tried the same with a 308 a few years ago and didn't ahve a lot of success -but it could have been the crummy ammo I was shooting at the time or the different twist in the 308.  In the 06, it worked just fine.  HTH and Good Luck.  Mikey.

Oh yeah - $20 for a blue sttel and and $28 for stainless.

Hey BigBill - thanks for the test site.  I guess the 7.62x39 performed pretty well in the 308.  I didn't chronograph my loads with the 7.62x25, but I think they were movin' on out there.  These inserts sure are a lot of fun.  I think you can have a ball with them if you reload the insert calibers you are using.  I know someone makes the 7.65 and the 7.62 Whisper cartridges - basically just heavy loaded bullets in the 30 Luger and the 7.62x25 Tok and they should be a hoot to shoot.

When I used the 32 acp insert I could have covered my 25 yd group with a dime - the 30 Luger and 7.62 inserts opened the group up to a quarter size.  These inserts have a lot of potential for use around the house.

I prefer not to make mine a semi-permanent conversion.  My accuracy does not suffer extracting the insert for reloading after every shot and I can go back to the 06 whenever I want without chamber problems.  Yep, these things are a ball.  Mikey.

Mikey;  You could pump up the 7,62x25 round in your rifle too, close to 1,900fps with no worries about hurting it.  I'm not sure how accurate the faster rounds would be.  It has potential and options.

I've been debating picking up another Spanish 1916 308 mauser to pick between the two i have which one is the worse condition one meaning that "looks" worse it has to have a good bore too, to put a 7,62x39 chamber adapter in to shoot the cheaper 7,62x39 ammo but it opens up a whole new world too with the 154gr wolf soft point ammo and the hotter heavier stuff that is being manufactured too.  It just sounds like another toy to play with and it has a bunch of options.  I guess the feeding has to be reworked so the magazine will work correctly too.  I just don't think a single shot will cut the mustard if you using it for up to deer sized game.  I just purchased some of the wolf 154gr 7,62x54 ammo to try out in my sks on my next trip to the 100yd range to see how good it is.  Since one of my sks's has been an accurate shooter  I'll use that one to test the 154gr ammo.  I wouldn't mind a sporterized spanish 1916 7,62x39 mauser with a scope too, it sounds doable.  I think if we cut and block the magazine forward just enough to fit the 7,62x39 round it will work and feed properly too. Much like shooting 9mm in a 7,62x25 pistol they block the mag forward for the shorter round.  I'm not sure why they didn't do that on the test rifle. And the cost your way under $200 for a total project gun.  I think it will be a worthy tac driver too.  Its just another way to have a bolt action 7,62x39.                    BigBill

Oh Man.  I just E-Mailed the company and got a response.  Gonna send for the 7.62x25/30-06 insert and a catalog.  I am pretty stked about it and can't wait to check out how much free-bore is in the adapter.  This could make a great Micro Whisper if it will allow bullets all the way to the 30-06 throat....small charges with a big long bullet...Whomp.

Robert;  If i can remember correctly having Free-Bore or machining in free bore was a big thing years ago to increase velocity.       BigBill

If anyone wants them, we'll load up the 7.62x25 for the longer barrels. Using the slower powders I think its possible to push a 90g XTP to about 2000 or so. Just let us know, we have loads from the 60g all the way up to 110g SP, HP, and FMJ.
