The only HOWA I have bought and used is a 1500.   Very, very happy with the results of the cheapest gun in the store.   The plastic stock is pitiful, but the action and accuracy are great.

I have the standard 243 and it is a great rifle, very accurate and solid.  I did have the stock replaced with a Bell and Carlson Carbelite stock I got for $139 at Lock Stock and Barrel. The B&C stock was an excellent upgrade.
I just purchased the varmint 22-250 with the 24 inch heavy barrel and I will pick it up next week. The Bell and Carlson Carbelite stock will not work on this rifle because of the barrel contour, it is a 6. (I spoke to Bell and Carlson, they have another stock for $199 thru them, more like the Weatherby upgrade.)
My thoughts are either to get a Boyds laminated stock or keep the original synthetic. I have not decided yet as of replacing the stock or keeping the OEM.
Anyway, you will be pleased with the 243.

I already own one 243 ,m77 all-weather, and I know they all shoot pretty good, I just really think this gun would be a real shooter, I just gotta find someone in my area to order from.

I consider the Howas to be Japanese Tikkas - which is a compliment.  Howas, like the Tikkas, have very good quality, accuacy, and good pricing.  Also, keeping in mind that the Weatherby Vanguards have Howas actions should say a lot too.

The Howa is an excellent rifle and I am sure you would be happy with it.  Another rifle that I like even better is the CZ American. You can get it in the same configuration as the Howa at close to the same price. The CZ 500 has excellent Walnut in a good classic style stock, the best trigger on the market and it is all steel, no pot metal or plastic. You may want to compare this rifle. Good luck in whatever you choose.-vernonp

I bought a Howa barreled action (.270) www.legacysports.com...
Lots of options with stock, etc. Terrific shooter.
I also have a Weatherby Vanguard. 20 years old! It came with a very nice walnut stock... Just a beautiful deer rifle!

I hate to say this, but I'm a little nuts on the Howa 1500s and Walmart.
I put a 6.5x55 on lay=away a couple of weeks ago.I went to wally world
the other day to put a little something on it.I was looking at the Howa
book and found out they make a .338 caliber also.Thats right,I now have
to make two different payments.I heard so much about the Howa,I have
to try them out. 8)
I'm not in VietNam anymore,so get someone else to walk point.('69-'70)
