I recently aquired a single six conertable S/N 62-683XX. The .22mag cylinder is fluted and is etched on the front to the gun. I can find no other markings to identify this as a magnum cylinder, but it will chamber magnum shells. I always thought the magnum cylinders were unfluted to identify them as being magnum. Is this unusual, or someones gunsmithing? Thank you.

If I am not mistaken I think some of these guns where made like this, with both cylinders fluted. I however cannot say for absolute sure. Maybe someone else can clarify for you.

Looks like around 1974-75 it was produced. Mine was produced in 76 or so and has the 22lr fluted and the mag non-fluted.

I somehow got two cylinders in 22 Mag. One is fluted, the other is not. Both work great. I have wanted to send it in to Ruger to get fitted for 22 RF, but they will do the safety conversion whether I want it or not, and I don't want it. Anybody have an extra 22 RF cylinder? I would make an even swap for either of my cylinders....fluted or non fluted. I am sure my freind ( retired gunsmith) could tune up the cylinder without Ruger's help. Hmmmm. I should probably run an ad in the classifieds.

If the 22 mag cartridge chambers in the cylinder it is 22 mag, a mag cartridge wont go in a 22 lr. chamber. I sold mine recently and regret it, I will have another one soon.

I agree Jerry. I don't know why anyone would get rid of a single-six. Great gun. Mine is my favorite bedside gun.

Got a stainless Super Single Six for my wife for Christmas a couple years back. The Mag cylinder is unfluted.

Ruger cylinders were both fluted until sometime in the mid-70s. neither cylinder was marked, however the LR cylinder had a firing pin groove cut-out on the loading side of the cylinder, around the circumference of the cylinder. After the mid-70s, once Ruger had depleted their stock of old model, fluted cylinders, the WMR cylinder was unfluted.

Here's a picture of the face of the two fluted cylinders. The one on the left is the LR cylinder.
