M & P question, and big gloat
« on: April 23, 2005, 10:56:07 AM »
Three S& W's this week. Range where I shoot had a nice 28-2, 4" barrel
has been shot but I got it for $200. Then I saw a 29-2, 6 1/2 barrel
probably 99.5% still in the wood box with papers for $400. That made me pretty broke, till I found a M % P, 4" barrel. Been carried  some. All the guys who looked at it think it has never been fired, if at all. $200 out the door.
Did I say 5 screw? Now the question.. Serial # 997866. Anyway to tell when S&W started putting Mod 10 ID on them? This has to be last year production.
Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

Sounds like you had a great week!

Smith & Wesson began stamping the M# on crane of revolvers in 1957.

Your serial number (997866) dates gun to 1940-1945.  The serial number range is 700,000 thru 1,000,000 for these years and it is obvious that yours will fall possibly in 1945.

Just to be certian, there is no letter preceeding the serial number?  Like a S or C?

Phil,

Sorry for the delayed response.

S prefix serial number has a range of 1945-1948 for S/N S 811120- S 999999.   It sound like yours is a 1948.
