1k rifle suggestions
« on: April 23, 2005, 05:25:52 AM »
hey

i have a chance to make one of those once in a huge while/lifetime decisions  on a 1k-$1200 rifle
im really looking hard at a sako 75 stainless synthetic in 270 wsm

i have two tikka t 3s in .270 and .243 and both shoot awesome
i was hoping the sako will be a great all around rifle

i want something i can shoot targets at the range and also go hunting with if i wish to   my other choice was the browning a-bolt III
any suggestions on either rifle or a great all around caliber would be great
seems the sako is a fine well built rifle
thanks all

I'd cast my vote for a Weatherby Ultralight.  You can have your choice of a variety of Standard or Weatherby Magnum chamberings.   If you've never seen or handled one of these you owe it to yourself before you make your decision.  It is one sweet setup

A Winchester Model 70 Supergrade is a great gun, if you can live with a nice walnut stock and blued steel.

The Remington Sendero is a neat little gun.  Actually, not so little, but if you don't plan on carrying it too far...

I don't know about a rifle, but the 270WSM is a great round. I have a "cheap" Winchester Super Shadow ($ 400 ) in 270WSM and it is very accurate.......... :-)

While I'm not real elated over your choice of rifle, The Sako 75 Stainless is the one they were having problems with not to long ago so I would have to vote for the Browning A-Bolt.  Now the .270 WSM is an excellent choice.  Let us know what you decided on.  Lawdog

How about one of the Kimber rifles in 308?

Take Care,

Mark V, 30-06... Hate to be so mundane. But with all that steel wrapped around an inherently stable round to begin with, you won't find a more versitle accurate range / hunting rifle... 3x9 Vari x III!

Might look at both Kimber and Cooper. Those Montana 1999 actions are nice too, much like a pre 64 Winchester. Not sure if they sell whole rifles or not, but it's a chance to get just what you want.

I don't mean to offend anyone here but if your more to paper shooting that using it for hunting I'd sure look at something in the 30 cal just alot better bullet selection. In the 270 have a 135gr SMK.  In the 7mm you have 130, 150 and 168 SMK.  In 30 cal you have 150,155,168,175,180,190,200,220 and 240gr SMK.  The 7-08 and 308 have always been good dual purpose caliber.  I've got a 270 Browning and it's my wife's and it's a good hunting rifle on paper my 308 with 168gr custom  is a good one.  There is alot of custom bullet makers for the 30cal, BIB makes them down to 112gr.  You start target shooting with a wsm factory rifle and you will wash your throat out pretty quick they are not target type rifles.    I've never down load my 300wsm so don't know if a light target load could be had.  I have down loaded my 300wby and got real small ground at 100yds for 5 shoots.  Just my .02  Tom Holland

Look at the Weatherby Mark V in 30-378 with a weatherby muzzle brake which will reduce the recoil down below that of a 25-06.  Sweet

Decisions, decisions.  Obviously I am a real Sako fan.  I think your thoughts about the stainless synthetic are a good option. A guy I work with just got the same rifle you are thinking about and thinks he is in rifle heaven.   Sako has taken care of the problems they had, as far as I have heard, so I don't think that is something to worry about.  But really when you are talking once in a lifetime, I would try to go somewhere where you could handle at least a few of  the different rifles.  The namebrands that the previous guys posted about are all good ones. . . but we are all pretty subjective in our choices.  Of course you knew that  .  I am not a short mag fan but if I was going to get one it would be in the 270 version. However, I would not go with a 270 unless I reloaded as I think (at least for me) that the  bullet weight choices are too restricted.  There is another site called Short Mag.org that has a lot of info etc...on the short mags.  Might be worth your time to ck it out.

hey
thanks for all the replies guys  looks like the 270 wsm is a winner caliber
i sure like my tikka t3 in .270 win i know that
as to the new rifle
i got  a new sako /barretta  catalog yesterday and   it looks like the sako finnlight is lighter than the 75 stainless synthetic  both come in 270 wsm

target shooting for me consists of going to the range and shooting 15-20 rds thru 4 or 5 different rifles so i feel that the sako will hold up well for that application

as to optics   i was thinking a finlight with a leupold vx3 3.5x10x40 might be an awesome setup
I HAVE NEVER BEEN A LEUPOLD FAN    but i figured id try one up against my nikon monarch s and zeiss conquest  on my tikka s

hopefully ill find the right rifle/scope
thanks for all the info guys

Div,

One thing about the Finnlites are that they, in my opinion, have too short of barrels for the caliber.  Granted you save a little weight over the standard 75 S.S/Syn. but with a magnum of any caliber I think you should have a 24" barrel.  But again, it depends on what you want to use it for and get out of it velocity wise.

hey longwinters
thanks for the info on the finnlight s
in my 2005 sako catalog they show the 270 wsm as having a 24-3/8 in barrel  so that would probably work great in that caliber  my tikka in .270 is 22in
seems everything from .243 up to 30-06 has the 20 in barrel and then
7mm  mag to 300 mag and all  the wsm s have the longer 24in
im still kinda leaning toward the stainless synthetic in 270 wsm but if i found a finnlight for a great price i way jump on it
thanks again for the info

Ok, i'll break with convention.

I'd build one...

Find a great action, get it barreled with, say, a krieger or douglas air guaged barrel, and put it all in a nice stock.  Probably about 1200 to 1300 clams.  With a light target barrel the gun should be ok for hunting and cut some nice holes in paper too.

My choice, if you reload, would be a 6.5 x 284 or a 6.5 x 55 SWE.
