I would sugest you look for a used rifle that "won't group " anymore. Most likely it has never been cleaned properly. You might have to spend alittle more than $250.00 but you will find a good solid action and that is what you want.

I question your motive though. You will have a considerable amount of money wraped up in Match Barrel and trigger. The stock will not free then there is the scope and rest. For and addition $200.00 you should be able to find a much better action or at least one with a know history.

Just my opinion.

Long...

Thanks for the advice.  I am really looking for a good remington or winchester (post-64) action.

I am also contemplating building up a Tikka action I have.  The only problem is that its attached to a .308 sporter barrel that regularly shoots 0.5 to 0.75".

My plan is to build a 6.5 x 284 heavy gun.  The company i will be buying the barrel from will also true the bolt face to the new barrel for a small fee.

borg1, keep an eye on the Wallmart gun rack for clearance sales. Last fall I picked up a .22-250 Rem 700 ADL synthetic for $250. Earlier this year I bought a Winchester model 70 Shadow (push feed) in .300 Win Mag, with a cheap 3-9 scope mounted for $300. Both at the same small town store.

borg1,

You might try Auction Arms at http://www.auctionarms.com/, Gun Brokers at http://www.gunbroker.com/, or even Guns America at http://www.gunsamerica.com/.  These are just three places you can start doing your search.  Lawdog

You can pick up a good used Savage 110 for around $200.00 to $250.00. Do some basic checks on the action and start building. You can get match grade barrels for $230.00 + or -  from Sharp Shooters Supply and install it yourself. Bench rest quality stocks are available from the same comapny or get one from the maker Stockade Stocks right out of the mold for $135.00.
I bought this Savage 110 LH in .270 for $225.00. The Stockade money saver stock was $135.00. It comes with internal aluminum frame with machined pillars. I did some light Bondo work to fill in mold marks ect. and did the paint myself. If the factory .270 barrel does not shoot to my specs I will install a barrel myself. Total for custom grade hunter with benchrest quality stock and premium barrel less than $600.00.

Riddle,

Nice piece.  Let me know how it shoots.  I like the Savage actions because they're strong.  With some truing to the new match barrel i will buy it should be decent enough.

I'll also keep my eyes peeled online and at Wally world.  Thanks folks for the information.

cheers,

Brownells has been closing out Remington 700 actions for $241.  Don't know if there are still any left, but you might take a look.
