Browning A-bolt questions
« on: April 19, 2005, 02:17:53 PM »
I have an opportunity to buy a used A-bolt in 30-06.  It has a camo laminated stock and is blued.  It also has a Leopold VXII 2-7 on it.  The shop is asking $550 for it.  I am wondering if that is a fair price, if browning offered laminated stocks as a special run or is it an aftermarket stock, and if anyone has any experience with these rifles.  I have never owned a browning and I wanted to know how they are as far as out of the box accuracy.  Any help would be nice.

The scope alone is worth $175-$200.  Abolt's are normally very accurate.  That's a good deal.

I own an A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 30-06.  It is my favorite deer hunting rifle!  The action is smooth as butter, and the gun feels great.  At the range, it will shoot single hole out to 50 yards - sub MOA at 100 yards - and close to 1.5" at 200 yards.  THIS IS A GREAT GUN, BUY IT!!!!!!!  I guess you get the idea.  I own many of guns, and this is my favorite rifle.  It comes with me every deer season and has yet to fail me!  It shoots Winchester Silver Tips and Remington Core Lokt 180 gr's exceptionally well.  The recoil is not an issue.

Good luck, and pick up the gun!  You won't regret it.

So let me tell you what I think bout the Browning A-Bolt    :-D  :D

I think I will buy it.  Does anyone have any idea whether the stock is from the factory or an aftermarket stock.

Those were made in the late '80's-------price is a tad steep for what it is.

The scope $200 New----but we're talkin USED so more like $100.

The rifle was like $400 new back then.

So I'm thinkin $350--$400 is fair for the USED combo.

In my neck of the woods VX-II's run you about $300.  Where do you find them for $200?

Overall, I think I'd try to haggle the price down a bit.

It sounds like a good deal to me. One good thing it is a Leupold scope. It still has a lifetime warranty. The VXII cost more than $200.00 new, closer to $300 new.  Let us know if you get it.  :D

Since its an older rifle---I suspect its the VariX----which were going for $200 when last sold.

I am not sure if it is a VariX-II or a VX-2, i did not pay that close of attention.  I think I will get it either way.  I have already got the Timney spring kit to help with the trigger.  Does anyone know how difficult it is to install the spring kit?

a-bolt spring kit

lgall,
I now have three a-bolts.  All great shooters. I have installed the spring kits in all of them, made a tremendous difference. It was very simple just follow the instructions that come with the kit. I would suggest you use the medium spring. Two of my rifles triggers break just under 3# with it.
