Whats the most visible front sight?
« on: April 18, 2005, 09:09:36 AM »
Got a Williams FP for my 94 BB and need to be able to better see the front.  Suggestions?  Which front sight is most visible/accurate?

I personally went back to Williams and ordered their fire point front, but had them put a yellow insert in it.  Like it a lot.

I have switched to the Williams fire sight (red insert) due to the peepers dimming a bit. Don't need glasses yet but the eyes are starting too get tired at the end of the day.

Prior to that I used a flat faced gold bead on many different rifles and was more than happy during the 35 year period that covered. Two other friends swear by the simple square post so I guess it is more what you are comfortable with and/or works for you.

I had a Firesight or True-Glo (can't remember which) put on my Mod 94 to use in conjunction with my Lyman peep sight. I remove the aperture to make it a ghost ring. I thought it was fine until I went to the range to try out different loads. The front bead "glowed" quite a bit and that made it appear fuzzy to me. I also need glasses for distance and my eyesight is such that with glasses off the front sight appears crystal clear but the target is difficult to see. Glasses on is almost the reversal. I went to a white bead and put a coat of blaze orange on it. It shows up well and because it doesn't gather light the fuzziness is gone. I'm going to try a scout scope on it next.

I just put a Marbles Sourdough fron sight on my Win 71. It works much better for target shooting than the OEM bead.  I haven't tried it hunting yet but I'm hoping it does well.  Got the sight at Brownell's.

I see lots of guys like the fiber optic sights but I haven't tried them.

Probably best compromise for all around- XO ramped blade with white center stripe.  Allows me to stay out as late as those with scopes.  No "flare" from a fiber rod.  Holds elevation and windage better than any type of bead.  Have one on a Browning '95 with Marbles tang that will do 2.25 inches at 200 yds.

Well, I ordered a firesight for it.  Will try it with and without the hood on to see how I like it.  The factory bead just shows black to me so it is no help in low light.

I want to use this for bear and deer and I my thinking is if I see a bear in dense woods and low light, I want a contrast between him and the sight.

I asked about their hood with the hole on top but it would not fit my factory ramp they say.  Might get an extra hood and cut it to see.

Which front sight is most visible?

I tried an ivory post front sight, carved to resemble a full length Heather Graham.  It allowed me to focus on the front sight better than anything else I've tried, but I kept forgetting to do anything besides look at the sight.

Call Marlin and order their "cut-out" hood.  I just got two (lost the one on my .45-70 and needed one for my "new" .30-30) and the delivered cost was around $8.

I think ( check the spelling)Hi-Viz is what a lot of hog hunters are using. Comes with differnt color inserts, green seems to be the best for me.

Here is a firesight with cutout hood thru a WWG ghost ring.
