Savage 10 vs 12
« on: April 17, 2005, 04:36:05 PM »
Hi all.

I've got a question for you.  I am going to buy a Savage in 223 and it is either going to be a 10FP or a 12FVSS.  The problems is I don't have a shop nearby that has the guns in stock to actually hold.  I like the 10FP because it has an extra swivel stud on the stock so I can attach a bipod and a sling.  On the other hand, the 12FVSS has a cooler barrel.

So, if you have one or both of these guns, which one do you like better and why?  I like beavertail forends but I cannot tell from the pictures on Savage's web page if either gun is in that style.  Thanks in advance for your help!

In late January, I bought the Savage 10 FP in .223. I didn't like the stock so I bought a B & C stock from Midway USA for $95. I put a larger Savage bolt handle on it too. I prefer heavy barrels and that is part of the reason I picked this Savage model. I have done nothing else to the rifle except set the Accu Trigger to 1.5 lbs.

This rifle is a shooter and the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I don't blow any smoke when I discuss accuracy or consistency. This setup can group 5 shot 55 gr Noslers very regularly inside a .500". I put a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 scope on it.

Any bipod I've owned had a place to attach a sling so the extra stud doesn't  matter

Good point wild willy ... the extra swivel stud meant nothing to me and I use a bipod all the time. The Bell and Carlson stock really stiffened the rifle up and improved accuracy in my opinion.

i'd go with the model 12 bvss (single shot or internal magazine, your choice).  I bought one in .243.  Its a better shot than i am, but i regularly shoot 0.75" groups or less...

Not sure if they offer the .223 in this model. i know they offer the 22-250, which is a real shooter in this model rifle...

Placed my order through a friend (brother) of a friend.  I ended up with the 4 shot 12VLP in 223 for $611 shipped.  i decided to go with a laminated wood stock because I figured I would have to buy one if I got the plastic model anyways.  I have a Bushnell 3200 5-15x50 and a Harris bipod on order as well, I'll try to post pics and a range report after I get it put all together.  Thanks to everyone for your input!

kkeetr...

You didn't say you were going to go first class all the way. You just got the model I have been wanting for almost 6 months now. If .204 brass would have been readily available, I would have bought the model 12 VLP back in December when my gunshop got their first ones in. Since then, I went ahead and bought the model 10 FP in .223 and a new Handi rifle in .223. Both of these rifles have been really pleasant surprises. Your VLP has an awesome stock on it that really fits my hands.

Good luck and keep us updated on your progress.
