Author Topic: Remington model 700 SPS Stainless a Flop!!! (Read 3772 times)

Well, after seeing these on the Remington website, I forgave myself for selling my model 700 BDL stainless .243 Win. I was excited because I was now going to be able to get back that rifle I wish I wouldn't have sold.
With my hopes high I went to the gun store to go look at this new model 700 SPS stainless. They had one! It was 300 win mag but I knew that the .243 wouldn't look any different accept for the shorter action. I asked the gun smith to hand me the rifle and as I looked at it I immediately understood why my dealer in Spokane is selling them for $489.00. The bolt is not jeweled, which is a fix that can be remedied quite easily. The thing that go me the most is it looks like the rifle was sand blasted with #7 shot. The finish is rough and uneven, and the edges where the barrel meets the action are not finished. All I could think of is how much dirt, grime and moisture would get trapped in these little dents. To boot the crown was not finished evenly. I tell you, my respect for Remington is getting worse all the time. What a disappointment. What the hell happened to remington?

What do you expect for $489.00? You can't buy a nicely finished American gun for much less than $1000. Stainless steel and hand polishing at union wages does not come cheap. And I won't even mention Savage's looks here.

Don't you mean Howa? As in Japanese Vanguards? Check out the Mark V, made in the USA, and compare prices. Here is an inexpensive wood stocked version...

I've been considering either a Stainless Remington SPS or a Tikka T3. I guess this is one more thing in favor of the Tikka.

I own both a Tikka T3 and a few Remington 700's. There is no comparison in regard to performance. The T3 is far superior to the late model Remingtons in both accuracy and craftsmanship. I love American bolt guns, but I will continue to buy what performs best.

Ramrod,With all due respect, I expect more for 489 dollars.I have a tikka t3 hunter in 270 win.I got from gander mountain for 450 dollars.Its a clean looking rifle that shoots consistent half inch groups.My other tikkas shoot the same size groups.Should we expect junk for 500?

Al in Md, you did not read my post very carefully. I said you should expect an American made 500 dollar gun to be badly finished . I did not say anything about accurracy, or foreign made guns.

The 710 received a cool reception---in an effort to have a entry level 700(700 Express) this new rifle is what you get.

The Tikka T3 is what happened-----nothing at that price point compares to it---for looks--accuracy and function----the Ruger comes close----the Savage with it nasty action and horrible stocks isn't in the same class as these rifles----but a step lower----accuracy is nice---but it needs to be combined with pleasing looks and a good feel to the hands.

Remington rifles are great if you like to work on guns and spend money at a gunsmith. Last year I got a new Rem. 700 LS in a 221 Rem. Fireball. It was a special run per Remington. After freefloating the barrel, glass bedding the the action, adjusting the trigger down from 6 Lbs. to 3 1/4 Lbs. and haveing a gunsmith lapp the bolt locking lugs it shot under one inch groups at 100 Yds. Any work on Remington voids their warrenty . On a 25-06 Rem 700 I have only one of the two bolt locking logs showed any contact , after having the lugs were lapped it shot 3/4 inch groups. The Rem. pump 270 Win. trigger pull was so bad that it had to go to the gunsmith to get it down to 3 Lbs.

Here's what I did about it. I bought two Tikka T-3's (7mag, 7mm-08). I topped them both with Zeiss Conquest 3-10x44 with the factory supplied rings that came with the gun. didn't bother to bore sight. Shot both rifles with Hornady Light mag factory ammo. Got them sighted in. 3 shot groups with 7-08 went .416 inches. The 7mag groups went .35 inches with two bullets touching each other. No need to adjust the trigger although you can easily do it with allen wrench supplied without taking the stock off. I shoot with a gun vise from the bench when sighting in. What more can you say?

I've been praising Tikkas for about 2 years now and it seems they have been discovered. They are not as popular as the Remchesters, but if Tikka keeps up their quality up and their prices reasonable, more and more people will buy (or continue to buy) Tikkas.

I have a CZ 452 American in .17HMR. It's a nice quality rifle. I'm not quite sure that I would put it in the same class as the Tikka, but it's close. The biggest thing that pulls me over towards the Tikkas (in addition to a lot of good experiences with their quality, performance, accuracy, etc.) is that Tikkas come in Stainless models while CZs do not. I heard that CZ may (or prehaps recently has) offered stainless models. If that's true, then I wouldn't hesistate to buy one.

I've handled a CZ stainless-----still not up to Tikka standards-----better than Savage-----they still need some work in the fit and finish dept.

Zachary, as Omaha-BeenGlockin just posted, CZ does sell a stainless gun, the model 3. It is sized for the short magnums. And the reason they need help in the fit and finish dept. is because this model is built in the U.S.A. !!! Look at the blued European made CZ's (452,527,550), there is no comparison.

Yeah the Model 3 is a nice looking rifle but I will never buy a WSM anything. In my opinion they are not needed, except for Winchester and other manufactures bottom line. When the model 3 comes out in standard calibers I will start looking at them.

I think the SPS is more of a current version of Remington's 788, isn't it? Supposedly a no frills, entry level rifle. While that does not excuse poor quality, it does explain that it isn't quite the "grade" of the BDL SS.

The SPS I got to handle and shoot yesterday was a weak response in replacing the ADL line......The idea that the ADL is just replaced by a synthetic hollow stock..that reeks of plastic , is not acceptable to alot of folks looking to feel a good rifle for their money. The ADL I have in a nice satin finished Walnut.....when placed beside the SPS......looks like it should be worth 150 bucks more.....and when you pick them up.....well....it's the difference between a gun....and a air rifle. However......after a few " test shots"....I found the accuracy was pretty darn good.....shot some nice 1" groups at 100....and with a tweak or two ....out of the 5 groups of 100 yrd shots......it performed exceptionally well. Less than 1" So , as dragline would say......."it may grin like a baby.....but she bites like a Gator..."......
I do not like the feel or look....but it is hard to argue with the targets in my hand.........

Ramrod...while I have been quite vocal on my disappointment with Remchester...I ordered/purchased a new .280 Browning Stainless Stalker for $720.00 tax incl....(mainly because .280s are hard to find) :?
I am more than happy with the rifle :grin: Pillar bedded, free floating, chrome moly barrel coat, nice crisp trigger....and it shot my 58.0gr load of H4831 in back of 139gr SSTs into 0.22" yesterday :shock: :shock:

No its not S489...but a lot better than $1,000 :lol:
