ruger red hawlk question?
« on: April 13, 2005, 05:13:50 PM »
I have a redhawlk in 44 mag tonight while at the range I experienced a problem that is new to me. I'm not one for quick fireing hand guns double action but at the end of my session I had 4 rounds left so I gave it a try on my ringer target to see if I could hold it on with full power loads. The first round went off the next three were light strikes.  I unloaded the gun and inspeced the firing pin and the hammer to look for the problem. Looking at the gate as the hammer raised and fell the load gate starts to drop from infront of the fireing pin before the hammer makes its strike. The last part of the trigger pull raises and lowers this gate.  Is this a common ocurance or does my gun need service for a timeing problem? I bought this hand gun about 6 months ago used so I don't really know it's history.  I haven't talked to the prior owner since purchase but I know it was bought in the early 90's .  Any smiths in the house???

woods, I have the almost same thing as you. I bought a used Redhawk couple weeks ago. Loaded up a bunch of 245,gc swc bullets using wlp primers. Last week the son-in-law and I went out to give it a try. Same thing as you. Shooting s/a with a steady slow squeeze the hammer would drop and just a light mark on the primer. Same thing shooting d/a. Son-in-law has a raging bull 44 mag and never had a prob using a slow squeeze. If I pulled the trigger fast s/a or d/a it would fire every time. Thought the prevous owner had cut the spring, but after checking it appears to be uncut. Thinking the same thing gonna have my gun smith give it the once over.

I would have a gun smith check it out or call Ruger up and see what they think. In my Ruger Redhawk 44 MAG, I never had that happen, It did not matter if I shot it fast or real slow.

If the mainspring was changed to make a lighter trigger this could happen.  If there is a marginal problem with too light of a mainspring it will generally show up in double action mode and single action might work fine.

I have the wolff springs in my Redhawk 5.5" it improved the da pull alot. I have gone thru 500+ rds both double &SA and have no lite strikes. On DA you have to make sure you have allowed the trigger to fully recover.

A number of Redhawks have misfire problems in double action.  There is only one spring both for trigger return and mainspring.  If the single action is lightened too much via the spring route it will misfire in double.  The hammer arc and spring compression are less in double action.  Also, Redhawks are plagued with poor firing pin protrusion.  Bowen makes a replacement firing pin that gets the protrusion up to the industry standard of 0.050-.055".  Each gun is unique in terms of tolerances so springs that may work in one might not in another Redhawk.  Mine worked after tuning with the Wolff 14 pound mainspring on all types of primers but with the 12 pound would only fire Federal primers in double action.
