My Bisley Hunter 44 came today!!! ?barrel break-in?

I ordered this March 30th, the dealer ordered the standard hunter by mistake. So after reordering it's finally hear. I can't wait to try it out, I made the premptive strike of ordering a ring lapping kit and Bell Mountain Keith #5 basepin from midway. it looks great, I'm very satisfied with the fit and finish and even the trigger is smooth and breaks crisp.

I've never done anything special for barrel break in before with a revolver. Do you guys recommend anything for barrel break-in?

I guess you could talk to 10 different people and get 8 different ways. I would say and this is just me, find your self some good out of the box loads and put a few hundred though. If you reload Im sure you can come up with something, if not buy a good well known out of the box round.

Truthfully I really dont know if there is a "break in" I know people that never even talk about it.

I don't go through all that breaking in stuff. I just go out and shoot them.

Just shoot it and clean it...Repeat with each range trip...I never broke in my SBHH I just shot it and when I got home from the range I just cleaned it.

the way i brake a new gun in is put at least 100 rounds though it that first day
or is that a day of fun i all ways get the two mixed up lol

Pinkerton:  when I got my M29 back from S&W after ordering a new barrel installed I found she wouldn't shoot cast bullets as well as the old barrel did, so I firelapped it and she now shoots better than before.  

The Ruger is a tough gun.  They last dang near forever.  And it may take dang near forever to break it in, just to give you the accuracy you want  if you just shoot the thing.  You may need to lap the barrel, but you may not.

Go shoot the whiz outta that thing and let us know how it goes.  Mikey.

My special break in ritual sounds very similar to the others who have replied to your question.....lots of shooting and eventually clean it when you get home.  My only recommendation is watch what your shooting.  First day out with my BH Hunter, I wasn't paying attention to bullet basics.  I had loaded several loads of varying powder charges and bullet weights.  Silly me, alternated between cast (lead) and jacketed bullets.  To say the least, I paid for mixing bullet types with cleaning time.  Jacketed bullets after cast lead have a way of permanently adhering lead to your barrel's rifling.  That's the only precaution I'd advise.

I wish I would've known that!!!!  I was thinking that the jacketed AFTER the cast would help scrape lead out of the barrel!   No wonder it has taken so much work cleaning the gun after I get back from the range!!!! :roll:

load up about 500 rounds of ammo. Now this is the tricky part very carefully load them in your truck and go to the range and shoot the **** out of it. Clean it and do it over and over again till you get corpal tunnel.

jakes10mm:  one of the topics discussed in the Beartooth literature about firelapping barrels was how to remove the lead from the barrel if some accumulation was seen after using the soft cast bullets in the firelapping process.  One recommendation was to use a jacketed bullet loaded backwards into the case - with the same powder charge you were using for the cast bullets.  I guess Beartooth feels that the bullet going backwards down the barrel removes more lead that it does when the ogive dymanics flattens it further down into the grooves. Anywho, that worked for me and it probably works fairly well or Beartooth wouldn't have written that up.  HTH.  Mikey.
