Question for Graybeard
« on: April 08, 2005, 01:27:02 AM »
Hi GB,

I came a across a post of yours describing how many Remington M. 700's you have.  Right now I am in the market for my first center-fire rifle, and I am stuck on what to buy.  My other post found that most people would prefer a winchester M.70 classic over a 700.  I personally think the 700's are much better looking, but that's about all I know. Because you have a very large selection of them, could you please tell me what you like about the 700's over everything else?  The model I am going after is the BDL or BDL-DM in 30-06.

thanks very much,
Preston

Like you I prefer the looks of the Remington's over most others. But I also like the safety that many seem to think is so evil. I'll take it over the three position lunacy every time. ALL of my rifles except the Ruger with tang safety have a safety that operates this way. If you're used to it you don't have to think about it at the time of use.

Remington rifles are consistently as accurate as any on the market. Folks claim others are as good as or better than but I've not seen it in the real world. Check what the folks who shoot the various competition games using factory rifles use. Hint: Remington.

I've found fewer quality problems with them than the other brands I've owned and on those rare occasions a problem has developed their customer service has ALWAYS handled it swiftly and at no charge to me.

If you happen to want to add some after market goodies there are more for the Remington and any other by far.

I think the real benefit to Remington rifles, in particular, the model 700, is the availability of custom / aftermarket parts.  If you can't get it for a model 700 they don't make it!

I think we all know the Savage is a much better out of the box shooter though..........and a fair bit more inexpensive as well........

Although I prefer a fireing pin block safety to a trigger block safety, I found that I could NOT make my 700 safety malfunction.
