finally got to work out my f.a. 44

went out and sighted the gun yesterday.  brought it home and cleaned it up, and stopped out again after work to see what i could do.   put my target at 50 yards, a 5'x4' piece of sheet metal with an 'x' taped in the center.  from a sitting rest, i fired shot #1.  right there.  fired shot #2.  no new hole that i could see.  #3 no new hole that i could see.  i walked to the target and there was only one hole in it.  surely i couldnt have missed, but i dont want to claim one hole group, either.  so i taped on 4 more x's, one in each corner.   went back to the firing line, reloaded,  and then proceeded to shoot out the x on the first three x's.  the 4th shot i pulled a little and hit and inch off.   damn this gun makes me look good.  

  i loaded a new bullet that i was using, a lyman 429421.  i shot a 7 inch thick poplar tree at 25 yards with it, and it blew right through the tree.  also shot  a stack of phone books i had taped together,  blew right on through that, too.   yikes!!!  
 
  to top it all off, i came home and casted up another 150 rounds of said bullet.  tommorrow i will lube and size,  load over the weekend.   spring has sprung and the myronman is living large.   :mrgreen:  i think the little lady even winked at me tonight.   :)  could it get any better?

About those cast....are you making an alloy such as the #2 or using wheel weights? Gas checks? :D

Man. Fiddy yards is 150 feet if my fingers and toes are correct. That's some awfully fancy shootin' with iron sights. And a wink to boot. I don't think it gets any better, nosirree.

i am using 2/3's wheel weights with 1/3 pure lead.   they seem to hold together really nice at this mix.   i recovered a few bullets out of a block of wood ... ah, screw it. instead of explaining, i'll try to post a picture of the recovered bullet.    give me a few minutes....

let's try this.   this is a 310 gr. rnfp gc bullet.  the gas check came off when i removed the bullet from a block of maple.   overall, the nose deformed a little,  but the bullet held together pretty well considering it was shot into a solid maple block.   it is the same mix i am making the 245 grain 429421's with.   i havent recovered any of those, yet.
