rdnck,

You old goat, what are you up to? Haven't seen you lately on any of the old haunts.

Did you break down and get a job or something?

Coydog--No job, thank goodness.  I have simply been casting and trying every 45 caliber bullet I have over 500 grains in the Shiloh.  I am coming to the conclusion that a man can have too many bullet molds.  Thanks for your concern, see you at Quigley.  Shoot straight, rdnck.

ps.  send me your mailing address by email.  I have your hat.  rdnck.

rdnck,

Hang on to the hat, I’ll get it from you at the “Q”. It’s only a couple months away, and besides, if you mail me the hat what will I be able to give you chit about?

You’re not getting off the hook that easy!

I just started casting this week, been busy between work travel, and trying to whack some geese. Geese aren’t coming up yet, so I’m casting. I’ve also got to turn a bunch of 45 2.4” brass into 40-70WCF brass, which is a chore I’m not looking forward to. I keep hoping the “Cartridge Elves” will show up some night, and I’ll wake up to find brand new shiny 40-70 brass staring at me. Unfortunately, I wake up to find the same 45 2.4” sitting in the middle of my reloading bench. Maybe that elf crap only works with shoes.

Good to see you’re still around.

Hey rdnk, I finally tracked you down! I have a new Wells Sharps in 45-90 that doenn't want to shoot (accurately, that is). Today, I finally got some decent groups using 78 grains Cartridge under a 544 Paul Jones Creedmore. This rifle has NO throat to speak of, so I finally seated the bullets all the way into the case and now maybe it will shoot. I may try 80 grains or more next. I also loaded and shot some 540 Brooks, seated two grooves out , on top of 91 grains cartridge- it also shows some possibilities. See ya at the Q. Humbolt

Mori,

Don’t feel too bad about not having any throat, I purposely got Ball-Wall #1 in 45 2.4”set up that way. I wanted a fully seated bullet with 45-70+ performance.

I’m using 76.0 MAR 2002 Goex Cartridge under a 540 PJ Creedmoor (the ones I sent you). Velocity is 1230 with a SD of 4. I need to do some more tweaking as it’s holding 1.5MOA at 200. I KNOW it can do better.

During load work up I crammed 84 grains in for 1320. Accuracy was good, but a little too much horse power (and recoil) for silhouettes. I must be getting old, can’t believe I said that.

Load for 45-90

Mori--If I remember correctly I recommended that you try 80 grains of Goex 2f or Cartridge and a 540 grain bullet seated with all the grease grooves in the case in your 45-90.  Most of them will shoot pretty well with that.

As an aside, I have had problems with my server since last Friday, and as of yesterday, seem to have come down with the flu.  At present, I'm not the happiest camper on the planet.  I guess it is an opportunity to cast some more bullets.  Shoot straight, rdnck.

Rdnk, Sorry to hear that you have the flu. The 45-90 is starting to "shoot", using your recommendations as to loads. I was try too much powder and deforming the bullets while seating them. Thanks for your good info and get well! Mori
