Author Topic: What would you like to see in a pump action rifle (Read 3286 times)

Ive been thinking about this lately, and Im curious as to what others think. But basically, what are the things you would like to see in pump/slide action rifles. My idea is to actually make a list of things, and submit it to several rifle manufacturers ( Remington, Browning, etc. ). Whether they actually do anything is another matter, but if you dont let them know what you want, they definitely wont do anything. So here it goes.

1. Browning needs to bring back the BPR or something like it. We need more choices other than Remington. Whats wrong Winchester, where have you been. If you know how to make a shotgun, whats your excuse? I would also like to see something from Savage as well.
2. Magnum calibers, standard and short
3. More rifle calibers, 308 Win., 30-06 and 270 Win. are great, but a man cannot live on bread alone.
4. A model for pistol calibers, 45LC, 44 magnum, 357 mag / 38 spcl. And any others.
5. A rifle needs a sling, so the rifle needs sling studs my main complaint of the 7600.
6. The ability to change barrels, and therefore calibers, quickly, easily, and with few tools. (ok, a dream but it is possible)
7. A stainless steel rifle, with a laminate or synthetic stock, call it a mountain / elk / because it looks good rifle. Chambered in a horse killing round like 35 Whelen, 338 Win mag, 325 WSM, or anything that throws out big chunks of lead.
8. A good, no great trigger. Something that is adjustable.
9. A trigger guard that will allow a thick, fat, gloved finger in without setting off your rifle prematurely.
10. Good, adjustable, iron sights, preferably a ghost ring style.
11. Detachable box magazine for rifle calibers, and maybe a tubular magazine for your pistol calibers.

These are just some of the things I could think of that I would like to see. What would you like to see in addition to this list.

Browning does have a version of the BPR in their international catalog. It is on Browning's website. I don't know what the price is.

I bought three 7600's in the past two years. I thought I was done with them. Remington screwed me once again with the 7615 Patrol Rifle. I always wanted a 7600 in 223, light, short, cheap ammo, iron sights, plastic stock, parkerized finish, must have. MIKE.

I would love to have one of the 7615's also. The only thing is I wish Remington would make the rifle with a walnut stock and blued finish. I have never been a big fan of "plastic guns." Just my preference.
What I would love to see is a 7600 carbine in 260 Rem or 7mm-08. That would be pretty cool.

Buying an extra set of stocks would be no problem. The blue finish would be another matter. I think this would be a great plinking gun. Mike.

The 7615 was left off because, well, you can get them now. I'm talking about stuff I want to see, that you can't get now. The 7615 is supposed to be offered in the 6.8 Rem SPC by the end of the 3rd quarter (so remington says). But good luck on finding ammo for it. Remington sure is screwing the pooch on the availability of ammo. Even though Hornady is supposed to start producing ammo for the 6.8, I don't see the ammo problem going away until a larger ammo manufacturer also steps in (read Federal), and who knows if or when that will happen. I personally would rather see the 7615 in 6.5 Grendel. A far superior cartridge, and it has not been suffering from ammo availability problems. Now, enough on that, and back to my original topic.

My original intent on this was to see if there is others that are also interested in seeing some of the same things that I listed in a pump action rifle. If there is enough interest, we, collectivly could voice our opinions to the manufacturers, and see about getting some other / more options / choices. Right now, our choice is a 7600 in 3 calibers, with wood and synthetic stocks and our other choice is...well..........see my point, we have no other choices. Where Winchester alone has about 70 different options for bolt guns.

257Robt - I love the idea of the 7mm-08 and the 260 Rem. That's what I meant by #3 on my list. I wanted to get one of the special run 7600-s in the 7mm-08 with the laminated stock, but I just didn't have the funds at the time, and now, I think they are out of them.

coyote trapper1928 - I know Browning offers it on the international site, but as far as I know, you can not get it in the U.S. That is something I would like to change. Plus, what seems odd to me, they offer it in 300 win. mag and 7mm Rem mag., but with 51cm barrells only, that's 20 inches - a little short for magnum rounds by about 4 inches.

Anyway, are there others out there that agree with my list? Disagree? Think I'm wasting my time and my breath? This is the time of the year to start thinking about these things, either that or do yard work. Your choice.

Are you thinking of currently produced ammo or some of the older ammo , such as the 303 Savage or British rounds? The Model 7600 would be great as a varmint rifle. Some of the calibers that come to mind for the 7600 in a varmint rifle could be : 220 Swift, .224 Weatherby Magnum, .22 Hornet , .223 WSSM.

On the medium sized calibers , it would be nice to see it chambered in : .300 Savage , 7mm Mauser, .270 Weatherby Magnum. and the 30-30 , also the .35 Remington.

On the large large sized calibers , I would like to see the Model 7600 chanbered in the: 7mm Remington Magnum, 8mm Remington magnum, .300 H&H, 45-70, .405 Winchester, .444 Marlin, .450 Marlin, .416 Remington Magnum, .416 Rigby, .356 Winchester

What I need is a 7600 in 358 Winchester with a 18 1/2" bare barrel, decelerator pad, walnut, Warne base and rings, VXIII 1.5-5x. I could have a 35 Rem rechambered, but a run of 358's from Grice's would be better... DL

Couldn't agree with you more. Would love to see a stainless steel laminated stocked 7600 in .358/250 savage/257 roberts
300 savage/ 8mm mauser. I do not understand Remington's market people. I understand from the people at 24 hr campfire that Remington is dropping the Classic series this year. I noted that if Winchester doesn't jump on this with 2 feet they are nuts. I live about 80 miles from Grices and get their flyers often, these special runs of 7600's I think sell well here in Pa. I have 3 a 760 - .308 / 7600 in .260 and 7600 in .280 love them all. In years past the 760 in 30-06 was a main stay here in Pa. and you can buy used 760 in 30-06 from 300.00 to 450.00 everyday. I recenty found a .257 roberts NIB from the guy I bought my .280 NIB, he has a bunch. I think you can try and beat Remington's ears, but I do not see it producing any results. I personally think they are sleeping with Wal-Mart some and have forgotten who made them what they are.

Bull, There are plenty of laminate stocked 7mm-08 on gunsamerica.com. I would not be suprised if Grices had some left. MIKE.

Xma time 2003, saw a add for Rem. 7600 .280 NIB, called the guy who had it , bought it and was talking to him. This guy is about 73
yrs. old and has bought a bunch of 7600 and 99 Savages. He sells them as he needs money. He called awhile back and said he had a 7600 NIB for sale in .257 Roberts, asking about 475.00 to 500.00. I don't have the
money but maybe able to find out if it is still for sale. This is a hot and cold type deal. He has a new Savage 99 NIB in 7mm-08 that I would like
but doesn't want to part with it yet. If interested I will let you know, this
could take some time and my not happen till NOV- DEC when he needs oil for his house.

I agree with DLuke. I'd like to see a run of 7600s, rifles or carbines, in .358 Winchester. I think that would make a great combination. Also, how about a run of 7600 carbines in some of the older calibers like .300 Savage and .280 Remington, and a special run of rifles in .338/06?

I'm in agreement with most of the comments here.

I'd like to see more 7600's available in carbine length barrels, as well as many really great cartridges that either aren't currently available or are only available in one or two guns, and many of those are boring old bolt actions. :grin:

Cartridges I'd like to see are: 9.3X62, .35 Whelen, .358 Winchester, .348 Winchester, .338/08, .338/06, 8X57, .303 Epps, .303 British, .300 Savage, .284, 7X57, .257 Roberts and .250 Savage

If Remington won't do it for the public, I wonder what Grice's in Clfd. might say, Special run in say .358 and some 7mm-08 - 260 carbines. I think Grice's gets Remington's attention on certain matters.

I agree with all of you and you suggestions. My own short list for Remington would be:

*More carbine offerings period, especially in the "lighter" calibers.
(I haven't bothered letting my son or wife to shoot any of my carbines 'cause the little flame throwers would beat them to death. Any .2** caliber in a 7600 carbine would be an awesome rifle)

*Put sling swivels on at the factory.

*Offer the pumps with open sights as well as peeps. (Fiber optics would be nice as well)

*Offer them with monte carlo stocks as well as "straight" combs.

*Install recoil pads at the factory!!!

I have to agree with 760 Nut about the factory sling swivel studs. Remington used to install the barrel band stud & butstock stud at the factory, now it's a do-it-yourself proposition. Would sure save us buyers the hassle, not to mention the risk of cracking the stock or misalligning the hole when drilling the butstock. How much $$$ could Remington have saved by dropping the swivel studs anyway???

I agree with everything that 760 Nut said. It seems to me that there would be interest in 7600's in calibers and setups other than what we have seen for the past umteen years. I wish marketing would listen up. It seems that everything revolves around rifles that are designed for hunting out west. Yes there is a market for it, but what about the guys who hunt the woods and swamps and don't shoot 400 yards? Bolts work ok, but the pumps are way better.
I would also like to see a carbine in 358 Win. I have a 35 Rem carbine and it is awesome. the 358 could only be that much better. I also wonder if a 30-30 carbine would sell. It seems to me that they could market it as a youth rifle. Just a thought.

Sorry I havn't written and posted my letter yet. I've been a little busy lately. Wife wants me to finish that bathroom that I started remodeling who knows how long ago.

Bronco blew the rear end to pieces last month, on the freeway even (what next ?).

But since I just got back from vacation (did a little panning for gold/camping/shooting in the Blue Mtns. - man, I love those mountains) my old thoughts started jumping back into my head. Of course, seeing that a limited run of 7600's in 35 Rem. that will be offered this year kind of helped too. :grin: My wife will be on a business trip this week, so maybe I can get it written then.

If you all have any more thoughts or want to restate ones that already have been posted, let me know. Now where did I put that thinking cap, havn't used it since I've been married.....

I think about the only way a manufacturer would get my money for a slide action rifle would be for a .25-20 in a slim trim package like those made in days long gone by.

The only down side I've heard about the 760/7600 carbines is they are loud. A 20" barrel would be a nice compromise. :wink:

I know this is an old thread, but ditto the quote attached, plus, how about a tang safety on the pumps, and autos as well? Those crossbolts are inconvenient, at least for this lefty.

A new model from Ruger in a short light carbine chambered in 65mm/223 or 256 supermag or such with a dobule stack box mag holding 8 or 10 rds.
