« on: April 06, 2005, 02:47:35 PM »
I am going to purchase the custom threat response rifle (TRR) from weatherby and dont know which caliber is more accurate (7mm weatherby Magnum or .300weatherby magnum).  Can anyone help me decide?

Answer a different question than you asked

A 7mm Wby has a case capacity of about 82 grains and the 300 Wby about 98 grains.  In other words you get about 25% more  case capacity with the 300 Wby.  This then translate into being able to shoot a heavy high B C  bullet and carry more energy further down range.  There are many different perspectives on acccuracy.  For 100 yds the 7mm might be a little more accurate because it is not burning so much powder and vibrating so bad as the bullet leaves the barrel.  At 1000 yards in the wind the 300 wby would likely prevail because of bullet BC.

The 30-378 Wby has a case capacity of 134 grains.

First as you most likely understand this is a prone gun and you will be well advised to get a brake on it because when you are prone  there is not much give to your shoulder.

Second  The 7mm will carry about 1000# to 1000 yds.  The 300Wby will go considerably  further carrying that much energy and the 30-378 and 338-378 are about as ultimate as you can get without going to the 50BMG.

Third Wby does not list the threat rifle as being available in 7mm.

I shoot a Ruger #1 in 7mm wby but I also understand the limitations of shooting the smaller case.

Back from dinner so I will finish up my thoughts

If it was me and it might be, because I am considering building a custom gun in 30-378 or buying the TRR.  I would get the 30-378 with with a 30 inch barrel #4 contour and brake, true bolt face and lap the lugs. desert camo stock.

This cartridge can can be loaded way down for easy shooting and then loaded up for what ever you need.   I hand load and believe that I should be able to get about 0.5 MOA out at distance.  My #1 in  7mmWby will shoot about 0.6-0.7 at a 1000yds.
