Are these about avg. groups? Pic
« on: April 01, 2005, 03:21:52 AM »
I was wondering if this is considered avg, good or sucks. These are 4 different groups i shot with a used 300 win. mag i recently bought. The lower left is a 5 shot group. The barrel was getting hot. I havent shot a centerfire in a while. Im used to small groups with my HMR. Big difference in the recoil   All were shot at 100yds off a crappy rest off the hood of my car.

reyn 61:  those groups are really pretty good.  A nickle is less than an inch around, probably 3/4" at that and two of your groups are just about that, 3/4".  That is really good.

As for your crappy rest - well, it sure served you well.  You may be able to group slightly better from a more stable or comfortable rest but I would have no problems with those groups and it appears your new, used 300 Winchester Magnum shoots very well.  Mikey.

Well i say crappy. It's an outers wal-mart rest. You take the plastic ends out and stick them in the slots. The thing weighs about 5lbs. I havent the funds for a rock, much less a cowan, sinclair etc. It seems steady when the gun fires but i have to adjust after each shot. I have to use the hood because i dont have a bench. I bought the gun for $250. It's a Savage 110. It came with a cheap Tasco. After the first 5 rounds i noticed something on the lens. I thought it was dirt. I then noticed its a piece of metal that broke loose and is hanging in the middle of sight picture. I finished shooting and the POI stayed but ill have to change that out. The 5 shot group started as my best. The first 3 shots are the top ones. The last 2 i took the gun off the rest to reload. I always shoot 5shots with my rimfires but i didnt realize how hot and how fast cenerfires heat up.

300WM's can be good shooters.  And you don't have to have a $1500 Leuy on a rifle for it to shoot good groups.  I lost $50 one night on a bet with a friend.  He had a Browning A bolt that hadn't been cleaned since the Ark came ashore and, shooting off a fence post, he put three shots in a target that you could cover with a quarter.  100yds.
Mounted on the rifle was a Bushnell 3x9 that had floated under recoil (over time) until the adj turrets was what kept it from moving further.
Your rifle won't be a shooter long if you don't watch the barrel heat.

Those are pretty good groups given the conditions you describe. And they just might get a little (or alot) bigger when you start shooting off a bench with a more expensive rest. You will then have to absorb all the recoil, and if you are not experienced with magnum centerfires, that can get you to flinching.

Not bad groups at all. Be careful with heat like they said, can be hard on the barrel. Make sure to let the rifle cool for 10-15 minutes at least after each group.

Very nice groups. Now that you seen that the scope will not hold up, get a good quality scope.

You know the guns shoots good, just do skimp on optics. JMHO.

beemanbeme, not to many $1500 Leupolds out there. He can get away with one under $250.00 and be just fine.  :D

EXCELLENT GROUPS considering your make-shift "rest".

As others have advised, let your rifle's barrel cool off between shots... and between "groups" as well.  Otherwise, your rifle's accuracy is going to suffer and you'll end up having to replace the barrel... and your new barrel may not shoot as well as the current barrel does.
