Adjusting Non-Adjustable S & W Sights
« on: March 31, 2005, 11:01:32 AM »
:? In the S & W Armorer's Manuel, it advises that guns with open sights can have the POI adjusted by removing the grips and cylinder; placing the end of the barrel and the top of the frame on babbits, and striking the frame with a babbit where the barrel screws into the frame.  This is greatly oversimplified and varies with the amount/direction of desired adjustment.  I was just wondering if anyone had tried this method.  Striking one of my "babies" with a babbit gives me cold chills.

Sounds like you are bending the barrel to me. Frankly that sounds like a terrible idea.   KN

A few years back when I was shooting trap some shooters bent their shotgun barrels so they would shoot high to compensate for the rising bird but they didn't stay bent.  They would gradually shoot back straight.
No way am I going to beat on the frame or barrel of my revolvers. Loads can be adjusted to change point of aim and I have bent front sights on single action revolvers to change windage.  If the barrel is not pinned, you might try either tightening or loosening the barrel to move top of front sight to correct windage.  It works on single actions such as Colt and clones.
