What Milsurp Pistol For Self Defense?

If you only had about $250 to spend on a milsurp handgun for protection while hikeing what would you choose. I was thinking CZ-52 or East German Makarov, are these good choices? Thanx

Bulgarian MAK...$159 BUT NOT C&R. Mine is very accurate. Russian MAK is a good choice also.

I would go for the CZ - it comes in two calibers more powerful than the 9mm Mak.  The 7.62x25 is an amazingly powerful cartridge and can be loaded with softpoints.  You can also get the CZs in 9mm or get a barrel conversion.  If you do that, get two barrels and have one reamed for the 9x23/38 Super.  I have a setup like that for my Tokarev, which is another inexpensive mil-surp you can obtain.

You can find Manhurin made Walther P-38s for about $250 or so.  There have to be others, too.  Mikey.

thanks guys,

Yeah I like the cz the best anyway powerful, inexpensive, strong(besides firing pin), reliable, and lots of muzzle flash(sweeeeeet). I am also 3/4 Czech anyway so I guess I owe it to myself to have one someday. I also found Makarov.com sells realy nice hollow points in the 7.62x25mm.

I have Mak, CZ-83, Tok-33 and CZ52 among others, but my suggestion would be a Star Super from SARCO. It's a great pistol and at $130, a good deal. Problem for some would be the 9mm Largo ammo is not available everywhere. Plenty of surplus still available, but I load my own. Got brass from Starline and use 9X23 dies (you can do OK with regular 9mm luger dies), Berry plated bullets and Unique powder. thhis load can bery safely outperform 9mm para.

I would recommend any milsurp pistol which as a) in a caliber that can be easilly perchased (with an eye to defense, read HPs & SP loads), ie .32 acp .380 and above & b) that you DONOT have to use RELOADS for self defense. This is about defending yourself not in a street confrontation, but in resulting inquiry/trial. A sharp lawyer can and will pounce on the fact YOU manufactured the ammo that stopped an other wise illustrious crimimal career and why did you put together such diobolical loads  and may have a suit after that from the moro.... er perp's family  . It has happened  :( .

Do you have any links or cites of cases where reloads have been a factor? This has been beaten to death on the 'net but I've never seen a reference to a case yet that reloads were a factor in a criminal or civil case.

I'm going to retract most of what I said about using reloads for defense mostly because of this thread http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=58614  I think using reloads using data from reloading manuals is fine. On the other hand "wild reloads" heavy powder charges or questionable projectles (exploding, murcury tipped, home made AP.....etc) could ruin your whole day...... And I came to realize that as a muzzleloader shooter I AM RELOADING EVERYTIME I SHOOT (I even use hand cast bullets). If God forbid I am in the position that if it (my .50 or .45 cal. plains pistols were needed to resolve a conflict......  :(

First the caliber of the handgun depends on where your hiking?? You can find a Star BM in 9MM under $200 its a smaller twin to the 1911. Or you maybe able to find a CZ75 or CZ85 used in 9MM for around $300 these will have the higher capacity mags available for it too. You can have "1"  in the pipe with 17 more of his buddies in the mag ready to go.  The newer CZ's are sure some sweet shooters.   I think there one of the best affordable buys in the modern handguns which in the handgun market the prices can get out of hand.  Other than the CZ my second choice is the Star BM you still have "1" in the pipe and a 8rd mag.  The Star is a little larger than the Tokarev. The CZ52 is another good choice and their cheap right now too.  I have seen the Chinese Norinco Tokarev in 9mm selling for around $130 here too lately.  You never know what you will find when you go browsing.   Just make sure you bring a borelite to check the bores since most of the ammo is surplus (7,62x25 & 9mm) and corrosive you just may find some have bad bores too.                BigBill

I have to go with the performance of the 7,62x25 over the 9mm and that would be the CZ52 pistol.   The 7,62x25 Sellier & Bellot new ammo with 85gr bullet comes out the pipe at 1,647 fps thats 1122 mph thats just a tad faster than superman :-D  And the 511 ft. lbs. of power is pretty impressive of a round that was developed back in the 30's.  So a CZ52 with Sellier & Bellot ammo is a great choice plus it sounds like a stopper too.         BigBill

Of course you can roll your own ammo like i plan on using the Hornady 30cal. 90gr HP/XTP's which i think will work very well in the CZ52.  I've been wanting a new personal protection carry gun and I'm looking at the 357SIG and the 7,62x25 is very close to the 357SIG in performance.  From what I have read the 357SIG has a very high fatality rate in law enforcement with bad guys in texas (100%) and maryland(99%).  I wouldn't be afraid to carry the CZ52 in 7,62x25 at all.  Its affordable and with new sellier & bellot ammo anyone can use it.

Protection while hiking.....$250

I assume we may be talking about animals, possibly big ones.

Those milsurp pistols aren't going to give you much feeling of security, should worse come to worse on the trail.

For the purpose you mention, within the price limitation, I'd go for a used revolver with a minimum chambering of .357mag. If you look around, you may get a good serviceable one in 41mag, 44mag, or 45colt.

I purchased this excellent condition Smith m28 357mag a few yrs back for $225

If you are lucky you can find a Ballester Molina 45acp for under $300

http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg158-e.htm

Looks like a 1911.  Internals are different.  Good gun for the money.

FWIW.  I lugged around a 4" S&W 686 for years.  It was a big, heavy unconfortable hip-mounted boat anchor.  I carry a LW Commander now when on the trail.  Much more comfortable.  Whatever you get, make sure you can pack it around all day long comfortably.

This is my opinion.  Your opinion may vary.

kjg:  the 7.62x25 can be converted to the 38 Super.  Some use the 9x23 case, as a rimless version of the 38 Super, for thier reloads.  I would not fire the 9x23 Winchester cartridge in my Tok - it is too hot and locks the slide back.

Toks used to come with either a 9mm or 38 Super barrel for interchange.  All you have to do is remove the 7.62 bbl and spring and insert the 38 Super and springs that come with it.  No change in springs for going from 7.62 to 9mm.  My Tok handled factory 38 Super loads just fine, although they hit about 6" high at 25 yds.  When I started shooting some of my hotter reloads in 38 Super, the slide would lock back.

I would try Kangs, in Ky.  Or Sarco or Samco or one of the other large parts dealers for the 38 Super barrel.

If you want to do the conversion but can't find a barrel, get a 9mm barrel and have a gunsmith rechamber it to 9x23 - just use the barass though, the loads are too high pressured for the Tok.  HTH.  Mikey.
