Last Spring's Turkey season saw a dramatic increase in injuries. The most since the start of Spring Turkey. The cause in ALL instances was listed as "Mistaken for Game". To avoid becoming a statistic, please follow some basic rules when hunting turkeys this Spring. Set up with your back against a tree larger than the width of your shoulders. Tie a floursecent band/tape around the tree your leaning against (it doesn't spook the turkeys, AND will let other hunters/people know you are in the woods). Be mindful of your decoy setup. Some hunters mistake decoys for live birds, because they're stalking, rather than sitting and calling. Use a gobbler call sparingly. DO NOT STALK A BIRD IN THE SPRING. You're only asking for trouble! And Lastly, Identify your target, and WHAT IS BEYOND IT.
April 23 and 24, have been designated this year's Spring Youth Hunt Weekend. If you can, invite a young hunter to experience the fun of hunting turkeys in the spring. Remember, only the youth can possess a firearm during those days. Your roll becomes a mentor, and one of growing our sport, and hopefully insuring its' future. Thanks, Joe
