7.62x39 ackley improved?????
« on: March 25, 2005, 05:52:39 PM »
I know some of you will think I've slipped a gear here (even I wonder sometimes) but has anyone considered doing an improvement on the 7.62x39? It seems to have quite a bit of taper. Will someone more knowledgeable please respond.

Why imp the 7.62 x 39??? I you do you still won`t have much more than a .30-30. When you imp. a case your velosity increase is equal to 1/2 the the % increase in the case volume. ie. if you increase the case volume by 10% you get a 5% increase in volume. If you AI the case you will not be able to increase the volume by over 5 or 6%. If your starting with a 2,300 fps muzzle velosity you`ll end up with about a with a muzzle velosity of around 2,350 fps. That would increase your max. point blank range by abt. 5 yrds.
There are afew other benifits, but none that are worth the cost.

catfish: don't know about improving a 7.62x39, but several years ago i saw an article in one of the magazines where they necked the cartridge up to 35 caliber.  a ruger mini-thirty was the test vehicle.  don't remember the ballistics, but they said that it was on par with the 35 rem.  seemed like a very worthwile wildcat.  never heard anymore about it.

They kind of AI that case it's called the 6ppc.  The Br guys played with a round called 308x1.5 and it would shoot some real small groups.  I shoot a 7.62x39 with super match 1/18 twist 30 cal barrel alot of fun.  I also shoot a 30x44 and 30x47 off the 300 savage case and they have a better case capacity than the 7.62x39.

Dave,  You asked a valid question. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to make the 7.62x39 cartridge into a 30 PPC type cartridge. Same as a 6 mm PPC necked out to .308. The 220 Russian is the parent cartridge to 7.62x39, 22PPC, and 6 mm PPC.  This can be done by using a set of cutoff 300 savage dies to push the shoulder down and give it a 30 degree angle. Then fire forming the case. Of course you need someone like Clymer to make a reamer for you. I have a Clymer reamer and a set of dies made by Hornady. I'm working on building my 2nd rifle right now using one of the mini Mauser actions, a Hart barrel w/1-14 twist, and a Microfit stock. What are the advantages? The round is much more efficient and accurate with the 30 degree shoulder. I have a 5 shot group at 50 yds that is well under .500" 100 yd groups stay under 1". The ideal brass to use is Remington with small rifle primers. I have a 22 PPC and a 6 mm PPC that I like a lot. Some guys are experimenting with 6.5 PPC. Give this round (30PPc) a try.

Can you send me some info on the 30ppc? I can't find anything on google about it. Thanks.

Dave, If you get serious---Clymer Reamers should have the reamer spec on file. You would also need a set of head space gauges---6 MM PPC work just fine. I started with a set of 300 savage dies that I cut .500 off the bottom--So I could form the shoulder and use them to neck size and seat the bullets. After a while it became neccesary to full length size cases so I asked Hornady to make me a set of dies. They cost about $100 and work perfectly. The cases need to be trimmed a little to 1.500". I used cast bullets and 6 grs of 700X to fire form cases. So far about $250 invested in tools. I have tried bullets from 110 grs to 190 grs. Best accuracy was in the 130-150 range. Lil Gun, H322, 2015BR best powders. I have never had high pressure signs. Recoil is mild compared to a 30-30.  I think this would make a great hunting pistol round. There is no loading data so you have to start with 7.62x39 and cautiously work up from there. It's just a toy, an experiment I inherited from a good friend about 5 yrs ago. Feel free to ask questions.
