Field and b.b. pistol in Eastern Oregon
« on: March 24, 2005, 12:02:10 PM »
Good afternoon to all.  I'm new to your site and just as new to handgun silhouette.  I played with it informally years ago but that's the extent of my exposure to it.

My question is directed at those of you in Oregon.  What are my options as far as field pistol or big bore events in our area?  Our local club has the equipment but doesn't currently have an active venue.

Any help and/or direction would be appreciated. :toast:

Where are you in eastern oregon?

They used to shoot silhouette in Vale but I think the closest club might be the Nampa Rod & Gun Club in Nampa, Idaho.  They shoot NRA Hunter Pistol and NRA Cowboy Rifle Silhouette.

At Blacks Creek Range in Boise they shoot NRA Cowboy Rifle Silhouette.

At Jerome, Idaho, they shoot IMSHA.

There are some clubs in Eastern Washington also but I do not know of any silhouette clubs in eastern oregon.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Without knowing exactly where you are in OR & how far you are willing to travel, I would suggest going to www.ihmsa.org.  Match schedules for all clubs are listed there by state.  I don't know if the NRA has a comparable site or not.  Best of luck.

I'm in La Grande, 50 miles east of Pendleton, about the same south of Walla Walla, WA..  I'm familiar with Blacks Creek but not interested in the cowboy stuff.  I believe Baker City has black powder silhouette but not interested in that either.  I don't mind traveling a bit (two to three hours would be about max).

Any further info. would be appreciated. :toast:

The COSSA range outside Bend does indeed shoot IHMSA silhouette.  Their match schedule should be at www.ihmsa.org.  Also, if you click on Web Watcher Window, you can click on "Match Directors" and find Joe Cullison's contact e-mail.

We also shoot in Grants Pass if you are in the neigborhood.  We shoot small bore/field pistol on the second Sunday, big bore/half-scale on the third Sunday, and AIR on the fourth Saturday.

As usual, Steve Ware is right on the money here.

The COSSA range near Bend, Oregon shoots IHMSA events and puts on a great shoot.
They have a great range out near Milikan on Highway 20.  The elevation is about 3500 feet and it is high desert.  The target definition is outstanding.

I have shot there a few times though I live in California.  It helps when you have relatives in Bend and have an excuse to travel there. (besides going to the Nosler Plant while you are in the neighborhood)

Look at the IHMSA web site and get Joe Cullison's contact info from there or we can post it if you cannot find it.  Joe took over the reins at COSSA from Norm Rife and is doing a good job.

I am serious, these guys will really help new shooters and welcome newcomers.  It is a nice range with some very good shooters to show you the ropes.

Hello this is Joe Cullison the Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association (COSSA) handgun silhouette director. Our range is located 24 miles East of Bend, Oregon on Hwy 20, near the town of Millican.
We hold three matches a month at the COSSA range.
2nd Sunday is BB and 1/2 scale at 9am
4th Saturday is 22 and FP at 9am
4th Sunday is FP and 1/2 scale at 9am
Most months the 4th Saturday and Sunday fall on the same weekend.
We are a bunch of very relaxed shooters, we follow the rules but we have fun. We allow 22 rifles on 22 days, lever rifles firing pistol cartridges on FP days and cast bullet rifle on BB days.
If someone would like to come out and try shooting silhouettes, I will provide a gun, ammunition, sight settings, coaching and the 1st entry is free. Our normal fee is $5 per gun.
Please feel free to contact me at jcunclejoe@aol.com or call me in the evening at 541-317-8801
Thank you for your interest.
Joe :D
