I would like to know your opinions on a Weatherby Mark V synthetic in 30-06 or a Vanguard Sporter 300WSM. Either cal. is ok for what I hunt. The question I have is which is the better rifle for the money. The Mark V for $550.00 or the Vanguard for $400.00. Thanks for any info

I take it that the Mark 5 is used for the $550 price...? and it's a new Vangaurd for the $400.00 price...? Both are excellent guns in my opinion...and if the Mark 5 is new...that is a outstanding price for it...and would be a very good buy...around here...a like new standard Mark 5 synthetic  in 30-06 goes for about $800-$900...and if it's the factory synthetic stock on it...the cost from Weatherby to upgrade the Vangaurd to it would be $275. shipped...the new wood  sporter stocks...are very nice...and I wouldn't mind having one on a Weatherby...as to the caliber choices...it would be easier to sell the 30-06 over the 300 WSM if you wanted to do that...and ammo cost would play into it as well...at least for me...the 30-06 is plenty capable of most any type hunting in the lower 48 states...prices vary depending on where your at...and may not reflect the same in your area...

The prices for both are new in box.  Is the Krieger barrel a better barrel than vanguards?

They can be...but not always.. I've had both and I like both...but since these are new in the box .I'd go with  the Mark 5 though...it will have a better resale value than the Vangaurd...and it is a stronger action as well...if you don't like the synthetic stock on it...you can always buy or trade for a wood stock for it.....

Question if you please;

Where did you find a Mark V for $550.00?  Now for your question, by all means get the Mark V.  Lawdog

The local Gart Bros. here in Reno (where I buy way too many guns...), had a MK V Synthetic in 7mm WBY on clearance for $599 for quite a few months.  Several times I came oh so close to taking it home, but the thought getting caught by the wife scared me off.  Then one day last month I got a call from my friend at the gun counter to tell me that the next day they were going to "get rid" of the clearance items at 40% off !!!  Upon checkout, the clearance price had dropped to $549, so with the 40% discount I got it for $329 plus tax.  Yes it was a Mk V.  No BS.  It's hidden out in the garage as we speak !!!  Got 2 Para Ord .45 LDA's to boot, same deal.  If the wife catches me this time I'm dead !!!

I'm also a bit surprised.  The Mark Vs usually sell a lot higher.

There is no question that the Mark Vs are better than the Vanguards, but whether the price is worth it is up to you.

Rosharb,

You've got a very good deal there; I'm glad you aren't going to pass it up.  Again, great purchase. :agree:  The MSRP for a Mark V Synthetic starts at around $1000.

Congratulations on your purchase.  Also Welcome to the family of Weatherby Mark V owners.  Just hope you don’t catch the illness that I caught.     Weatherby products are like peanuts - can’t have just one.  Got 16 in the safe(centerfires, rimfires, pistol and shotguns) and counting.  Lawdog

Heh heh.  Isn't that the truth?  I know exactly what you mean; so far, I only have the Mk. V Accumark, and I really enjoy it.  Only reason I don't have more than one, is the price; I can't really afford another one at the moment. :(

They made pistols at one time?  I'm not sure I've ever heard of that before, or even seen one.  The rest I've heard, but not pistols.

Yeah, Weatherby made, for a short period of time, a pistol called the Weatherby Accumark Centerfire Pistol.  Based on the short Mark V action.  Came in two versions - single shot bolt action and one with a three shot magazine.  The one I have is a single shot in .22-250.  Design is similar to the Rem. XP100.  Weatherby didn't manufacture very many before dropping them from their product line.  From what I understand they were only offered in .223 and .22-250  Remington calibers.  Every so often one will show up at one of the auction sites.  Try http://www.gunbroker.com/ because that is where I got mine.  Lawdog

Buy the Howa Model 1500 because it is the same rifle as the vanguard but you will save about a $100 because you're not buying the weatherby name.
These are VERRY smooth rifles that are copies of the rem 700 action. In fact I'll ruffle a few feathers here but everybody I know that owns one, myself included feel that Howa makes a better copy of a remington 700 than  remington does at half the price.

I have both rifles, in fancy walnut stocks. I have opted for B&C thumbholes for each, as I just couldn't hunt and feel comfortable smackin'
around pretty stocks. The Mark V is a terrific accurate rifle with any stock!
The Vanguard with real pretty satin stock, shot like crap with that pretty stock on it! The stock was very tight against the barrel, for the full length.
I didn't have the guts to take a dremel, with my klutziness to the stock.
I sent the Vanguard action off to B&C. The barrel with B&C stock touches
nothing for the 20" length = Great accuracy!!!
Don't get me wrong, the Mark V, would be tough to beat, pretty classy with with that high gloss, fancy, as it sits in the cabinet, but if I was to put together a hunting rifle, I'd buy the .270 barreled action Howa 1500 from www.legacysports.com, and fit it to the synthetic stock of my choice.

They are not exactly the same, there are differences.  I looked at both sitting side by side in the store.  Also you don't get the Weatherby guarantee either.  And that alone does count for a lot.  Lawdog

Guys, I'm not interested in selling my fancy Vanguard stock, that came with my .270 20+ years ago. Soon as the hunting season is over I get it back on. That carbon fiber stock is so ugly.... As an item of interest on the fancy stock, there is a raised grove in the bottom barrel channel of the stock. I guess that is to float the barrel. Of course the purpose failed due to the sides so tight. I'm sure you guys could straighten it out. I ain.t that handy, and the synthetic helps it to be a superb deer rifle.
Again the Vanguard is the better deal. The Mark V is just a better rifle....

Where are Weatherby Mark V actions currently being made?  I heard that they had signed a contract with SACO Defense Industries in Maine a few years ago but I'm not sure that deal is still in place.  If the Mark V's are still made in the U.S.A., I might consider buying one.

WEATHERBY MARK V
« Reply #22 on: July 06, 2005, 08:27:46 PM »
I AGREE WITH LAWDAWG, ONCE YOU'VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SHOOTING A WEATHERBY, YA JUST GOTTA GET EM IN EVERY CALIBER THAT'S PRACTICAL. I LUCKED INTO A "USED" MARK V IN 30.06 FOR $400.00 THAT WAS DETERMINED BY TWO DIFFERENT GUNSMITHS THAT IT HADN'T  BEEN FIRED. GLASS LINED, TAPPED AND DRILLED, HAND RUBBED WOOD STOCK... A REAL BEAUTY. TOO PRETTY TO BEAT IT UP AROUND IN THE MOUNTAINS WHERE I HUNT. I USE IT PRIMARILY FOR HUNTING PIGS IN THE FOOTHILLS. PAID $850.00 FOR A MARK V .270 SLIGHTLY USED LAST YEAR AND AM NOW LOOKING AT BUYING A NEW VANGUARD IN 22.250. STILL LOVE MY TRUSTY REMINGTONS, THOUGH. IMO WEATHERBYS ARE JUST A JOY TO SHOOT. THEN AGAIN, AREN'T MOST GUNS? WHATEVER THE CASE, I'M HOOKED ON FILLING MY GUN SAFE WITH MORE WEATHERBYS. THAT IS, IF I CAN SOMEHOW GET AROUND THE "WIFE FACTOR". SEEMS THE KIDS NEED SHOES, OR SOME TRIVIAL THING LIKE THAT. WHERE ARE HER PRIORITIES? THE KIDS HAVE TO EAT FIRST. OH WELL, I HEAR HER CALLING ME NOW, SOMETHING ABOUT THE STOVE BEING ON FIRE OR SOME SUCH THING. NOW I KNOW WHY I SPEND SO MUCH TIME HUNTING. NAG, NAG, NAG...
GOD BLESS AMERICA AND MAY GOD HELP CALIFORNIA

The beauty of my 06 Mark V, is with the chrome moly barrel it shoots EVERYTHING extremely well...I love 220's. I also love my .270 Vanguard,
with fancy walnut... The big difference is that after warm the vanguard walks. The Mark V does not. Not a concern deer hunting, but clear indication which is the better rifle. The Mark V is heavier. No problem if one stays in shape! I bought mine with fancy walnut for $499 in 1989 ...
sure is pretty... Put a Ramline on it for hunting!
