Pawn shop finds
« on: March 17, 2005, 09:49:17 PM »
I was at a local pawn shop the other day and found a older Win m70 in 30/06.  I got it for a steal.  A guy brought it in and they only offered him 150 bucks for it.  I told him I'd give him 175 and it was a deal.  The blueing showed quite a bit of wear and the synthetic stock had some nicks and wear, a typical alaskan rifle.  It was about what you would expect from 26 years of wilderness hunting. I gave it a good cleaning and touched up the stock with a coat of spray on bedliner.  The bore wasn't that bad, it wasn't perfect but looked salvageable.  Another excellent side bonus, a 2-7x33 Leupold Vari XII in leupold mounts.  NICE!!!

I picked up a box of federal classics 180gr SP and took it to the range this afternoon.  I was more than a little shocked when my first 100 yard group was under an inch?  What, sub MOA with this bore????  It went on to produce several groups of 1" or less.  I was pretty impressed.  I had got this with the intention of having it rebarreled to 35 whelen but shooting as good as it does I might just have to keep it as a truck/loaner gun.

Keep your eyes on those pawn shops. You can get some super deals!

I can only imagine how hard the weather in on rifles up there in Alaska.  In fact, I can't believe that the gun you bought lasted over 20 seasons, much less also shoot sub MOA groups.

Congrats on your find. :D

Every time I go to a gun show or even some of the pawn shops I am amazed at how beat up some of the guns are.  Especially seems to be prevelent in 357 and 44 mag Ruger blackhawks.  They tend to be pretty popular boat guns for halibut boats, that salt spray is extremely hard on them.

I have found that the small out of the way pawn shops have some of the best bargains.  As "Redhawk" said some of these guys don't know what they have or any idea what they are worth.  But it is always a good idea to remember the old adage, "Caveat Emptor: Let The Buyer Beware", when dealing with pawn shops.  Lawdog

My buddy came across another find the other day, a Rem 700 ADL in 300 WM.  He got it for 275 and it looks brand new.  We took it out to the range today and it was shooting 1 1/4" groups with Federal Classic 180s.  These are the cheapest ammo you can find for the 300 up here at $16 a box.  Not bad for cheap ammo.

I got some of the federal classic 180 Grand Slams for $13 a box so I picked a couple up and sighted in the Win 70 with those.  I didn't like the grand slams quite as well as the other 180 SP ammo but still printed a consistant 1 1/2" 5 shot groups.  Its now taken up permanent residence behind the seat of my pickup with a couple boxes of shells.  Never know when it might come in handy.

Just before the L.A. riots, I checked out a pawn shop in South L.A.  Amidst all the junk was a Winchester 70 in 300 WM mounting a Balvar V8 scope.  I convinced them to sell it to me for $110 out the door, with a soft case included.   Took it home and cast the chamber.  It had been a 300 H&H, rechambered to 300 Weatherby.  Rifle was made in 1954.  It had been restocked, the barrel shortened 2 inches and all the metal rust blued.  Under the recoil pad was a Weatherby business card from their South Gate, CA store.  I imagine the owner bought the rifle with the idea of getting it entirely redone by Weatherby.

They also sold me a Heym Model 52, basically a reworked 98 action, with a rat tail barrel in 30-06 (although a poor reaming job on the chamber), stock was broken on this one, but I bought it for the name.

A month later the riots took place and it was burned to the ground.  Some other firearms there I was interested in, but no more.

Another good find

I made another good find today.  A CIA Centurian m98 like new for $225.  Its a reworked 98 mauser.  Century arms put a new barrel on them, reblued them and stuck them in a synthetic stock.  The thing looked like it had never been fired.  I put the 2-7x33 leupold  on it and headed to the range.  Low and behold, she's a shooter.  It was shooting those same 180gr Grand slam Federal load into a pretty decent group.  It must just be that scope.  That Leupold 2-7 has been on a few rifles now and all of them have shot pretty darn good.  I guess I'll have to do something with one of these 30/06s, I see a rebarrel job in 35 whelen or 9.3x62 in my future.
