Should my buddy give up on NEF???
« on: March 13, 2005, 05:19:21 PM »
My shooting/hunting partner is a big NEF guy.  About six months ago he sent the receiver from his .223 NEF in to be fitted for a ML barrel.

It came back with a beautiful SS barrel.  Only one problem, the breach plug didn't fit so good.  There was a burr on the threads.  It was fine when it was clean, but after a few shots she was a BEAR to get out (we have a bit of expierence with breach plugs and know this wasn't normal).

Anyway, he sent it in to NEF - again.  They corrected the problem.  Now, he has a new problem.  The action won't stay closed.  It seemed a bit difficult to close from the start.  He had to really "snap" it.  After shooting it a dozen times, it became apparenet that even after closing it, it would pop open with just a bump.  He's now ready to throw in the towel on NEF and their MLs.

What do you guys think?  Is this typical?  How should he approach NEF?

Tell your friend to stick with it and contact H&R/NEF. When putting in the breach plug, use plenty of good lubricant and just finger tight. Prior to leaving the range break the breach plug free. I hope this helps your friend.  :D

Thanks Jerry.  NEF corrected the breech plug problem a cpl weeks back.  They said there was a burr on the threads.

The problem now is that his action won't stay closed.  With minimal force or even a bump, it popps open.  He's really discouraged.  In fact, he's ready to throw in the towel and send it back.

We'll see how NEF handles it.

Mine did it too.  The crud from the 209 shotgun primers got into the action and I had to blast it out with brake cleaner. Works fine again.  I don't know if a new spring from the factory might help or not, didn't need one after I cleaned it.  The "new" Remington muzzleloader primers should help, I would think, as there is supposed to be less blast from them.
If life is a beach, why am I so crabby?

NimrodRx, like corelokt308win stated,  the action can get crud in it and action will not lock tight. Spray out the action and use some caned air that is used on computer parts to dry the brake cleaner. I have used WD-40 and it worked. Some simple cleaning may solve the problem.

justa reminder guys, anytime you use brake cleaner on your guns remove any wood stocks FIRST, the brake cleaner will immediately ruin any finish you have on the wood....<><....

Thanks guys.  I'm not sure if he has considered that.

He's just had it.  He has three other NEF's in his gun cabinet, but he's done with this one.

Without pushing too hard, he got the good folks at NEF to give him a full refund on the barrel.  They're even covering the shipping.  Says a lot about their customer service.

sounds like he should just make his .223 a .223.

i own a number of NEF's, and am more than happy with them.

confidence in the field is of utmost importance.  i too would return the barrel if it caused worry.
