« on: March 11, 2005, 09:59:02 AM »
anyone out there use, hunt with, shoot a ruger 96/44? If so how do you like? How does it compare to the Winchesters and marlins? a will it shoot 44 spl?
and on the older models where is the safety located?
Thanks

Dave

My wife has a 96/44
It's not terribly accurate, and has a fair bit of felt recoil. It is very fast, and will handle either 44mag, or 44Spl with ease. For hunting purposes, it is a great close range deer rifle.

Bad trigger, bad accuracy.  All in all, it has been recognized as somewhat of a lemon by Ruger.   It simply does not compare in quality or accuracy to a Marlin lever.  Unless someone just really really likes the detachable magazine, which I think only holds three, then there is simply no reason to buy one.  If you are going to shoot deer at 50 yards or so, I am sure that it would be fine.

The mag holds five, and it shoots groups in the three to four inch range at 75 yards.
