Help Me Spend Some Money!
« on: March 10, 2005, 01:34:09 PM »
Between a pay raise & tax refund I'll have some money to spend. I can budget $500 to $600 for something in the cannon world. I could do one of Hern's Coehorn mortars with the hardware kit in this range.

I'm just asking advice before I spend the money. I'd prefer a cannon to a mortar but there's a limit for that price. I might get an okay barrel but carriages also cost.

What do people think about Hern's Coehorn?

I'd appreciate it if people responded here rather than privately so I can get feedback on the suggestions.

(Why can't I win the lottery so I can buy it all?)

I have had  a Hern Coehorn for several years.  It is steel lined 2.25" bore about 10" deep, has a flat base [no powder chamber].  The outside casting is rough, it would take a lot of grinding & polishing if you want a smooth finish.  I have never found a good supply of cans for projectiles, 2 3/16" is a real nice fit. Most cans I find are 2 1/8", to loose.  Anyone know of a good ammo source of 2 3/16"?

2 lb spherical rock cod sinkers are 2 5/32" in diameter.  Used to be able to find moulds for them.  Maybe you could con one of our recent mould makers to make one for you.

C2ND.... 2 pound cannon ball sinker molds are available from http://www.hiltsmolds.com/CannonBallSinkerMolds.htm.  It is a cast aluminum mold that puts out a fairly good ball... cast with either scrap lead or wheelweight.  I wouldn't recommend casting with zinc in this mold though.  Have a spare one if you'd be interested.  PM for details.

Yokes for Swivel Guns?
« Reply #5 on: March 11, 2005, 01:05:16 PM »
I just wondered if anybody knows an easy way to fabricate one or a good source for them.  Hern Iron has an ENGLISH SWIVEL GUN, 1750-1815, current price $379.80. I just heard from Joel at Hern. The current ones are 1 1/2" bore but the new ones will be 1 5/8". Golf ball shooters! I think I'd prefer that to a Coehorn but I still haven't ruled it out.

I'm going to start a new topic for this so please forgive me if you see it twice. I just want all my options together before I spends the $'s.

I decided on a Hern Coehorn mortar & hardware kit. I was awful tempted by Powder Keg's barrels. He does beautiful work. I still might get a mold or two from him.
