Gee. Lotta help you guys were.

:cb2: I tried to be strong. Tried to resist. And everybody here, at work -- everywhere I looked for help said, "Buy it!" The pressure was too great. I caved. So I now have that 4" M57 that I was trying sooooooooooooooo hard to ignore.

Now if someone could help me out with the date of manufacture, I sure would appreciate it. The SN is S299XXX.

There is another number on the crane that I don't understand:
       81290
          Z

Thanks guys. Never thought I'd have a .41 mag.

Cool - my kind of gun - have one actually.  Probably the nicest trigger of any gun I have.  A m 58 was my first (wish I kept it now), I traded for the 57, then needed the Ruger Bisley in 41 and a stainless redhawk in 41. I get tempted by the Taurus tracker in 41 but the press is real mixed. Sure would like to have a smaller 41 in stainless for general backwoods carry work but the 57 does alright.  There's a tricked out lightweight 657 at a shop I visit now and then but haven't been able to swing the $700+ price.

Welcome to club 41.

Serial number dates gun to 1967-1968.

The additional number on crane is a manufacturing assembly number.

This is a great gun, hope you treat her well.

sorry I forgot to mention the age.

I think you'd be best off to contact S&W for help.  I think I saw a  place on their page the other night.

check it out at http://www.smith-wesson.com/

Hey Old Griz, I have some advice for you.  Next time, Don't resist.  You will find that it is hopeless, and resistance is futile.

Congrats on the great find, you will definetly be happy with it

:cb2: Hey—I lasted three whole days! (It would have only been only two, but I work two jobs and couldn't get there on Monday.) I was trusting in the sovereignty of God. If it was still there on Tuesday, He meant for me to have it. If not . . . . well, there are two M29 Trail Boss models out now, and my gun store has both of 'em. (Financially I came out waaaaaaay ahead on this deal!)

Now Griz, don't try to act all mad because we "suggested" you bring that little honey home!  We are NOT to blame, if blame must be laid then drop it squarely where it belongs......on the feet of Smith & Wesson, for making such a sweet piece in the first place.   You are only a man, and should not be held responsible for succumbing to the charms of such a sexy little vixen.  Besides, the only real reason NOT to buy a cool gun like that is because you already have three of them!  You're forgiven, now go ye forth and blast away!  :D
