I understand how cats can wipe out populations - there are some species of animals in a couple of Pacific Islands that were wiped out by cats dropped off by passing ships.  I have also had (still do) lots of outdoor cats and live in a rural area.  Some cats hunt, some are too lazy.  The ones that hunt usually bring in mice (why we like having them around) and occassionally chipmunks and small songbirds (we don't have a shortage of either of these).  I haven't seen any of my cats bring in anything else in over 30 years of having outdoor cats.

There are already plenty of people who hate cats and like to kill them, I'm not sure we want hunters in that category.  I've seen 'hunting' sites that glorify that kind of behavior and I'd prefer to not associate with behavior.

In Michigan the county I live in I was told several times by the Dog Catcher that if you can catch the cat bring it in.  If you can't then well do what you must to get rid of it.  I am not one for killing pets, but I also own 4 dogs that stay on MY property.  You have all these cat owners that could care less what they kill or do.

cats and other liberal protected species

We have lots of feral cats here in NH and MA.  The liberals would choke on their cereal if you suggested shooting them.  As mentioned above, the Humane Society has a program for feral cats where they catch them, give them their shots, and then turn them back loose.

Heck, we are being overrun with coyotes these days and they don't even want to shoot them!  Just this week, an off duty cop and his 4 year old daughter were attacked in Wilmington MA.  This is a residential area about 15 miles from Boston!  Still, the MA liberals talk about trying to coexist with the coyotes.  Last Summer there was a similar attack and they interviewed the homeowners who stated that this just meant that their backyard was the coyote's territory, and that they would just have to bring the kids in the house before dusk to keep them safe.  They even claim that it is man's fault because suburbia is consuming the coyote's natural habitat.  Of course, don't confuse them with the fact the coyotes were not natural to this area until the last 20-30 years.  They have spread down from the far north, and now cover the whole northeast.  It is the coyotes that are consuming our natural habitat because they have no natural predators.

So, the chance of getting such a law passed is slim to none, and the antis will use it to beat us over the head as bloody barbarians.  So, I guess the best bet is "don't ask, don't tell".  See any cats in the woods, don't ask where they came from and don't tell where you left them!
Success is a journey, not a destination...  Might as well enjoy the ride!!

Just remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.  You can rely on 911 or on 1911. The choice is yours.

I remember a animal control officer once warning people about shooting stray animals who were damaging property, etc. He said to call them and they would take care of the problem. When asked how, they said they would hold the animal for 7 days then put them to sleep if not adopted. When asked how many have been adopted year-to-date, the man replied 14. Six dogs, and 8 cats. 234 had been put to sleep. I just don't understand their logic. I once had a woman who used to feed 10 or so stray cats on a shopping center I patrolled. She honestly used to tell people where to park, because the human activity disrupted here kitties. The woman did not even work there. She was finally told by the property manager to either take possession of the cats or they would call animal control and have them taken of their property. Tenants PAYING MONEY FOR RENT were complaining about the cats and the image of their shops. Well, the woman never took possession of the cats and they were taken away. Can you believe the media was actually taking the woman's side. The statement they were not harming anything became the norm for this situation. I want to be elected as a lawmaker so I can pass a bill outlawing the extermination of the cockroach. I would also aggravate the penalty to a state jail felony if a person is convicted twice for the same offense. What do guys think? Anyone ever ask a lawmaker what they plan to do when a child dies of rabies  caused by a feline or canine variant? 10,000 human deaths a year around the world from stray animals. And what happens when a rabid skunk and a stray cat eat after each other on carrion? One more thing:  PUT A COLLAR ON YOUR ANIMAL!!!!!! WITH AN ID TAG!!!That way when I find your cat going through my trash, I can turn YOU into the district attorney for a state jail felony charge for animal cruelty since YOU obviously abandoned it on me.

Maybe instead of putting a season on cats(and dogs) they ought to put a season on those idiot people(city and otherwise) that drive to the country and release ther no longer wanted pets. getting rid of one problem would drasticly reduce the other. As for livestock,I've got a neighbor that came to my door a while back and told me that it was coming up on spring and that sometimes his horses would get out looking for "spring flings".He pretty much looked gutshot when I told him I would drop them in there tracks and dump them back over his fence with my loader.I am not interested in others livestock grazing in my food plots. Sorry I got off subject a little but my place is mine and I'll control it as I see fit.SGB

People who let their precious cats run free should know better. Cats are not supposed to be just running around messing up the food chain. I was also taught to SSS. Shoot, shovel, and shut up. What it the point of letting a fixed cat run around anyway? It is not natural. A fixed cat will still spend all of it's time eating songbirds and other useful animals. I don't care what anyone says I will still give them the 22-250.
