Information appreciated.
« on: March 04, 2005, 04:12:37 PM »
I have a partial box, 14ea., of:

38 Caliber Revolver Ball Cartridges
for a Colt Double Action Revolver
Smokeless Powder Muzzle velocity 775+-25 feet per second
Dupont Bulls Eye Powder, H. Lot 57 of 1912
Frankfort Arsenal

The above information came from the box.
Bullets are RN lead.

The box is in poor condition.

I have been unable to find any information on this cartridge.

It is not listed in the "Cartridges of the World", 7th Edition. at least under the above name.

Does anyone have any information on this cartridge.

Your box data fits the description of the .38 Long Colt cartridge, predecessor of the .38 Special.  This was US military standard before the adoption of the M1911 .45 Automatic Colt Pistol.

1912 would still have plenty of the old spanish american War era .38 Long Colt revolvers and cartridges in common US military use, as the M1911 pistol and cartridge did not swing into full production for several years.
