Kingfish in the Keys
« on: February 28, 2005, 04:45:08 PM »
I went fishing in Key Largo (which is kinda like my backyard here in Miami - only about 45 minutes or so away) this past Saturday.  We were in about 120 feet of water and the seas were about 2 feet, which is really good for this time of year.  Anyway, there were a lot of kingfish out there - and some sailfish too.  Surprisingly, my dad was fishing for yellowtail snapper with a little yellow jig, like 1/16 ounce, with a little piece of dead bait, and a 20 pound kingfish hit it.  It took my dad about 20 minutes to bring it up with a spinner with 17 pound test.  The tiny little jig caught the king right on the inside lip.  Kings can cut line in a sec, so my dad was VERY lucky to have landed that fish!

Have any of you ever caught kingfish? (King Mackerel)
