Savage 23C

I found another one of these at a gun show yesterday for a fair price. It is chambered in 25/20 and can't wait to shoot it. Anybody shoot these? It is drilled and tapped from the factory but I can't figure out what kind of mount would go on there. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe the Model 23 was the forerunner to the Savage 840 and Savage 340, which took a side mount for a scope.  To my knowledge, the 340 never came from the factory with holes drilled and tapped for a scope mount, but I may be wrong.   That may have been different for a Model 23 though.  Some Model 23's did come from the factory with holes drilled and tapped for peep sights, which would have a different configuration than scope mounts would.

Weaver was popular for scope mounts for the 840/340 but drilling holes in a double treated receiver made alot of gunsmiths pretty mad back then.  Those receivers are NOT easy to drill.

If you'd like to see what a 840 scope mount looks like, go to this website:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=29254817

You should be able to tell on sight whether your rifle would use the same mounts.

I didn't see any scope mounts listed in the auction at the moment for your rifle but they do show up from time to time.

I once owned a 340 carbine in 30/30 that had a Savage 4x scope and a Savage side mount. The Indian head logo was on both the mount and scope so yes, the 340 was factory drilled in some cases. I found a Weaver reference that listed base numbers of 15 and 16 for the 23C but that might require drilling and I don't prefer that. The 25/20 is 80% and I won't want to ruin it's value, especially since I got it for $200. My 32/20 has a set of holes for a peep but the 25/20 has 4 holes along the right side of the action that have old factory screwin them. I removed the screws and if it was drilled after being purchased, it was done quite professionally.

The mounts for the 340 show up somewhat regularly on the auction websites.  Whether the same mount fits a 23, I'm not sure.  Right now none are listed on any of those websites.  If I remember correctly, they usually go for about $40 or so plus shipping.

If you aren't in a big hurry, they'll show up sooner or later.

I go to a gun shop with a healthy NOS inventory.  I see you're from Pa also.  I can check with my local guy and see what he has, if you like.

I did a quick  search for the mount you have listed above.  I found one,  the web address is in your Private Message Box.

Thanks 1/2", I replied to the message and found what I'm looking for. By the way, I'm from southern York County, about 5 miles from the Mason Dixon line.

Keep an eye out for Johnny Reb trying to cross the border.   Unless they want to over run Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

In that case, let them through.
