Old Tang safety style Ruger 77 in 7x57 - centenial edition
« on: February 25, 2005, 05:47:40 PM »
I have a chance to buy a Ruger 77 made in 1976 that is stamped on the barrel and has a medalian on it that says something about the bicentenial celebration edition.  This gun is new in the box( under the bed of the old gentleman's who owns it), with the ruger rings in a little felt bag and all of the paper work.  Honestly,  I don't think it has ever been fired.  I'm left handed and have already bought 4 of his guns, 3 browning high walls and a Win model 88 lever action.  I'm about tapped out for cash.
But..... this would just be an investment type rifle.  He's asking $465 dollars for it and I don't really have a clue to it's true value.  I can't find any mention of centenial model in my gun values book.   Any insight or input at this point would be appreciated.  thanks, cflier
oh ya, he also has a sporterized sprinfield in 308 Norma Mag that is beautiful for $ 250 that is calling me also.  Someone remind me that I'm lefthanded.

cflier:  I own several old rugers of the tang style and a few that were manu. in 76 but none of them have anything about the centenial on the barrel, however in the blue book of values there is a note stating that over the years they did do some barrel markings that made the rifle into a collector niche, but didnt say anything about the specifics. :D    JIM

Even without the garnishment, it ought to be worth that.
I think I'd pass the '03 by.  Unless you wanted to buy it as a novelty.  I wouldn't want it as a user unless I had it gone over by a really competent smith.

In 1976 Ruger made guns where marked "Made in the 200th year of American liberty" or something to that effect.  I am not sure if they all where or not.  I had 1 in a .257 Roberts that would not shoot at all
finally sold it .  Maybe some Ruger collectors would know more about the value.

Centennial model Ruger’s do have “Made In The 200th. Year of American Liberty” stamped on the left side of the barrel.  I have seven of them(different models) and all are worth upwards to 50% more than an older Ruger of the same caliber/model.  You just have to find that person that is willing to pay the added dollars.  Lawdog

I have a Ruger in 357mag. police service six in stainless  that was "Made in the 200th year of American Liberty" also and it was a model GF32 w/2 3/4" barrel that was made for that year only and it was never in their catalog too.  I have no clue to its worth because i can't find it anywhere.  I'm not sure how many were produced.   I still have the orginal box it came in too.                                                             BigBill

You would be surprised at how many people throw away the box their firearm came in without realizing what they are worth.  Hang onto the ones you got.  Lawdog

The 77x57 Model 77 RSI Mark I (tang safety) is a hard to find, very desirable  , hunting rifle/collectible. In the 200th year model, NIB, you are looking at a steal at that price.  I have seen rare examples of the non-200th year with price tags @ $1000.

Go for it. But stick it back under bed.  As soon as you popo a few rounds or even mount the rings, the $ value falls off steeply. Get any paper work with it, including original bil of sale.

Or at that price slip a a 4x Leupold her and use it for what Bill Ruger intended

Hard choice.

Good luck,

oneb

I have all the orginal handgun boxes with the serial numbers written on them matched to the gun on them.  I have the box from every rifle I have purchased since the 70's too.  So i have an all matching box to handgun thats worth a cup of coffee too when i part with them well a few $$ more anyway.  Kidding but i got all of them.                     BigBill

Me too, but it took a little explaining to get the wife around to believing that they were worth keeping.  Wasn't until I showed her at a gun show what the price difference could be that she agreed to that fact.  Lawdog
