stainless/laminate .338
« on: February 24, 2005, 12:27:38 PM »
i mostly shoot shotguns so im not really up to date on the quality of different rifle makers.  currently have a savage 10fp in 308, a rem model 7 in 260, and a 1895 marlin in 45-70.  i always wanted a 338 win. and i love the look of a stainless rifle in a laminated wood stock.

the t3 has really caught my eye, and the price looks reasonable, savage dosnt seem to have the exact model im looking for, but i could always go aftermarket on the stock, im really happy with my 10fp, and i also have their mk II rimfire.  im going to stay away from remington, the model 7 performs alright, but i think they have thier guns overpriced for the quality you get.

recomendations?, i already have a nice m-8 6x scope to go on it, just need the gun.

I think the Tikkas are nice too, but they are light little guns.  I think a 338 in a 6 1/2 pound rifle would sure be a sinus clearer; you know, kick the snot out of you!

Ruger makes a pretty good gun, and at least one model comes in stainless and laminate.  I don't care for their bolt, personally, but a lot of people do.

Don't leave out the Winchester model 70, still American made, and available with controlled round feed.
Stainless laminated guns leave me cold, though, so I can't recommend any. If I were too lazy to take care of a hunting rifle, I would put a Mauser action in a fiberglass stock, and just paint it, lock, stock, and barrel. Wait a minute, I just did that with a .30-06 I picked up cheap at a gun show, now I have a $250. all weather rifle.

Yes, the Tikka T3 Lite guns are, well, light.

However, the Laminated stocked Tikkas are a bit heavier.  In fact, I own a Tikka Laminate Stainless in .25-06 and it is noticeably heavier than the synthetic stocked Tikkas I own.

I love Tikkas, but you may also want to take a look at the Remington too.  They have an absolutely beautiful laminated stainless rifle, and I think that they have it in .338 also.

I'd op for the Savage. I have 2 in the rack now, had 2 others as well. My buddy picked up the 116 Weather Warrior in 338 for this years elk hunt.
Great carry rifle, only complaint is the recoil off the bench, wicked. This comparing it to my Savage 116 in 7mm STW.
It also came with the accu trigger, nice feature.
Throw a Boyd's laminate on it and you got what your looking for.
