Author Topic: How's the barrel/forearm fit on your Sportster? (Read 879 times)

I just picked up a new Sportster in .22 mag and it has a large gap (1/8) between the barrel and forearm on the left side and a touch condition on the right side. I just called NEF's customer service and asked them about it and they said that it's normal for the barrel to be off center in the forearm like it is on mine. That may be true and I don't really have any problems with it (as long as it shoots good) but I'd be interested to hear about the barrel/forearm fits on other Sportsters. Hows the barrel/forearm fit on your Sportster?

I own the identical rifle and my forearm doesn't fit anywhere near as you described.....the barrel is centered in the molded channel on mine.
If you look at the forearm closely when it's off the gun does the channel look straight or warped? Sounds like a molding or warpage problem.

I have a bunch of Handis, Ultras and 3 Sportsters, they're all straight, but there have been posts on the Centerfire forum about the threaded barrel studs mounted a bit out of plumb which would cause the same problem. Send it to H&R if you find that to be the problem. You might be able to change the hole in the forend, but that might jeoparize a warranty repair by H&R. :cry: You can email or call them about the problem to see what they say...

As usual, Quick is right on the money, it could be a warped forearm but the first thing to do is check if the forearm stud is on the barrel properly (square). Remove the forearm and look at the bottom of the barrel while it is still attached to the frame, you should be able to easily see if the stud is centered or off center. If it is crooked or off center I would suggest returning it to H&R for repair or replacement of the barrel. Tell them you do not want the forearm hole reamed out, but that you want the forearm stud properly centered....<><.... :grin:

It sounds like there's something wrong with mine based on what you guys have said. I am going to check to see if the lug is off center and/or if the forearm is warped tomorrow. I am going to shoot it first before I decide what to do with it. If it shoots good I probably just leave it, don't want to fix something that ain't broke. If it doesn't shoot good I'll be getting a hold of NEF in a hurry.
