Hi, I've found a couple cannons I like the looks and size of. One is a Winchester that says it fires 10 gage blanks. It seems like it would be easier (and cheaper) to find black powder and cannon fuse than 10 gage blanks. Just wondering the pro's and con's of a blank .vs. loading the cannon yourself.

I've yerned over the Winchester 10ga blank cannon for decades. Never could find one in my price range. They are convenient though. You might have to order the blanks through your local ammo distributor, or you could reload your own.

And then again, you could build your own REAL cannon ....

Cannon Mania has shotgun blanks from 12 to 2 guage.

I had one of the Winchester cannons when I was a youngster. No problem loading the shells but case life is very short with paper or plastic shells. They do make one heck of a bang considering the small size.

I know someone with a 12 gauge reloader. Would the blanks have only the wad or would they have cotton or some other filler in place of the shot? A blank with only the wad seems pretty good but the casing crimps back on its self. Is that the reason for the short case life? Experimentation may be in order.

I wouldn't use any wadding except a thin (.050") card wad to keep the powder in. If you don't want a whole shell full of BP, just push the wad down to the top of the powder and seal with water glass (sodium silicate.)
