I've finally gotten to shoot my new rifle. I've gone through the breakin period and shot some pretty impressive groups yesterday. I broke the barrel in by shooting 3 rounds and cleaning. I did this routine for 30 rounds. I'm now shooting two, three shot groups and then cleaning. I'm going to do this for the next 50 rounds or so then I will go to three three shot groups. I use Winchester Super X 100gr. power points for breakin.
Yesterday I bought some Federal Premium 85gr. bthp. They didn't shoot any where near as good as the Winchester ammo. I have always had good luck with the Federal ammunition, I guess this gun didn't like those bullets. The Federal shot 2 groups around 1 and 1/2 inches. Not what I expected. I shot 4 groups under 3/4of an inch with the winchester. I want to try a 95gr ballistic tip and see how it does. I am well pleased with the rifle. All I've done so far is a little trigger work. I want to float the barrel and see what results I get from that.

Has any one floated a remingtin Modle 700 VLS? If so, were the results good or bad?

I floated my barrel on the 243 this past weekend. Decided to take it to the gunsmith monday to have it pillar and glass bedded. Hope to have some good results. Can't wait to get it back and shoot it. Does any one have any suggestions on some loads to try?

Howdy!

I have the same gun with a 6x16 Xari-X II scope and timney trigger. I have to admit, it's kinda on the edge of being sold or traded because I have 2 other 243s. In reality, I'll probably keep it.

What are you going to do with it? Hunt big game, varmints, or punch paper? I use 55gr nosler BTs and primarily punch paper with it. Can't remember the ;oad...it's been a while. For 100gr loads (95gr BTs or 100gr partition) I use 48gr of H4831sc. Though I use these loads in my Ruger 77 UL and #1. Haven't tried them in the VLS...yet!

Lemme know how you make out at the range!

Congrats on shooting her.

I started out with cleaning vigorously at the beginning, but after the first 20 rounds, I stopped.

why? I shot 50 rounds the other day without cleaning her and it lost absolutely no accuracy whatsoever. 80 rounds fired thru and I couldnt be happier, oh and I have the .308 model.

Every gun is different, but my friend just got his VLS as well....We cleaned it twice within the first 20 rounds fired, after that, he did another 30 or so and if anything, it got more accurate.

There is no way Im even bothering with free floating the barrel or doing any bedding of any kind. I can hit quarters all day long at 200 yards if I wanted too. Thats damn accurate for out of the box if you ask me. I say if its accurate then dont touch it. Its meant to have that pressure point upfront, thats how it comes from the factory.

Im assuming you werent totally pleased with its performance seeing as you had work done to it?

Doug, if you decide to let that VLS .243 go, get intouch with me. I may be interested depending on timing. I have a few friends who might be interested in it as well. This is all mute of you arent selling though, lol.

Thats assuming its also accurate and not some lemon

GoneHunting, the accuracy difference probably has more to do with bullet weight than with ammo manufacturer. I think yours just like 100 grains better than the lighter ones. To be fair, try some 100 grain Federal and see how it does. Saying that though, I must admit that I am not as big a fan of Federal ammo as I used to be. In my 270 I was VERY surprised to see how much better the Remington ammo shot than the Federal. I am a firm believer that Hornady makes the most consistently accurate ammo -any rifle I have used it in liked it better than anything else. I would definitely recommend you trying some in 100 grain. I have to buy it over the internet but I get a good price and it gets delivered so I don't mind. They don't load for the 260 but luckily the Remington ammo, after a good bore scrubbing shoots lights out. The Federal doesn't.

What is twist rate of your gun's barrel?

I have a savage bvss in .243 with accutrigger. The twist in it is 1:9.25, and a friend calculated the optimum bullet size for that twist to get optimum bullet stability. it turns out the best weights (depending on velocities i shoot) are from 80 to 95 grain bullets.
