Take advantage of a salesman?

I was  at a local shop today and saw a huntsman.  I asked to hold it.  the tag said Huntsman but the barrel clearly said Sidekick.  I informed the salesman and he said it was definatley a Huntsman.

It is priced at $129 and I almost bought it, is that a steal of a price for a Sidekick?  Is the sidekick rated for 150 grains? I think it is a 24 inch barrel.

You are correct Beanman.  Buy it.  I just paid $169 for my sidekick at BassPro.  The sidekick has the 26"barrel, and you don't have to fill out the firearm forms like when you buy a rifle.  My manual says it will handle 150 gr. of pyrodex pellets or 120 gr. of loose powder.
Some dealers are probably confused on the deal of the huntsman and sidekick difference.  The huntsman frame can accept rifle barrels and the sidekick cannot.

No mater what that is to good a deal to pass up,but i think the Huntsman can only be fitted with shotgun barrel's only. Not real sure.I do know that someone on here will have the right answer.************ogo

I paid $139 for my 24' Huntsman. That is a good price for the Huntsman. If it is a 24" Sidekick its a great deal, Dallas Tactical has sold them lower but now they want $154 for a 24" Sidekick.  Walmart used to sell Huntsman at $128 but their website today did not list the Huntsman so I don't know what they are up to. They are still selling the Huntsman/12 gauge combo.

Note that the 24" barrel is being phased out. All sidekicks and huntsman will have 26" barrels. I like the 24' barrel myself for the handling. Don't see me using more than 100 grains of powder in Georgia. My 2 cents worth.

Here is the dilema I'm  having.  I'm pretty sure they mismarked the Sidekick as a Huntsman and because of that the wrong price is on it.  It is a fairly large chain so It's not like I would be robbing a Ma and Pop shop but I'm still undecided as to what to do.  The good conscience is sitting on one shoulder and the bad on the other is saying, "buy it".

Not being able to fit other barrels to it is not a problem for me, I have a SB2 in .22 Hornet and am planning on more barrels for it.

BeanMan,

Let them know their mistake but tell them you will take the Sidekick for the price it is marked at. The Huntsman is considered a "Firearm" since it can have other barrels fitted to it, would require a background check and a 4473 form. The Sidekick is NOT considered a "Firearm" and could be purchased without any paperwork, just get your receipt and be on your way.

Educate them! Somebody has to, might as well be you. :wink:

Here's what I would do. Go back in and look at the gun again..........look at and memeorize the entire serial number........walk away and write it on a small piece of paper that you have conveniently in your pocket when you go in......call H&R Customer Service (978-632-9393) later and ask them to give you the full specs of this gun. They will tell you everything they have in their files and then you will KNOW if it supposed to be a Huntsman or Sidekick and if the store is trying to pull a fast one or if they are just in ignorance.
I found an odd gun in a store one time being sold as brand new and it was something that had been peiced together and I found that out by doing the same thing I just told you to do..........can't hurt and then you can be SURE.

fuzzy is correct re: the Huntsman only being able to have shotgun barrels fitted to the frame, UNLESS is came as a combo gun with a .243 barrel, then it was made with a SB2 receiver. Getting back the the question of if this gun is a Huntsman or a Sidekick, how about just measuring the length of the receiver? If the dealer has any Pardners in stock just match them up side by side. The Sidekick is shorter. Speaking of ethics, tell the dealer of his error, then tell him again. We are viewing it as a error, perhaps he wants to sell the gun for the price he has on it. After you inform the seller numerous times of your feelings and he is still willing to sell you the item for the price on it, BUY IT if you want it. I also prefer the 24" barrel and see no use for the 26" barrel or for 150 grains of BP....<><.... :grin:

:idea: Usually when the gun shop places a gun on display the box it came in is in the back room.  I would ask to see the box the gun came in and match up the serial numbers on gun and box.  Then I would check owners manual, which should be in the box, to see if it is a HUNTSMAN or SIDEKICK.  

To tell you the truth, no matter what model the gun is 129.00 is a good price for either.  It would cost well over 100.00 just to get a Huntsman bbl. fitted to a reciever.

As for ethics, Busta gave you good advice.
