17 Cal. Question
« on: February 18, 2005, 03:15:17 PM »
I know little if anything about this caliber. In fact I am not sure I even posted it correct. Does it come in an Encore barrell? I have a 209x50 and a 308 in the Encore. Based on what very little I know thought this might be a fund round to shoot. I notice that it has different prefixs and that I don't understand either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

There are three popular 17 cal rounds commercially available now.  They are the 17 Remington which is a centerfire round and the 17HMR and 17M2 which are both rimfire rounds.  I have a G2 in 17HMR and love it.  It does 1/2" groups at 100 yards and makes a super squirrel rifle.  The 17HMR is based on a necked down 22 magnum case while the 17M2 is based on a necked down 22 long rifle case.  MV for the rimfire rounds is about 2600fps and 2100fps respectively.

I have a .17 Remington in a 22in Encore barrel and it is very nice. The .17 Rem breaks the 4000fps barrier and is fun to shoot. It is a fun chuck gun and even nicer coyote gun.
Just my humble opinion

Just be aware that to shoot the any of the rimfire barrels in the encore you have to have a special rimfire adaptor for the encore or a special OTT barrel.   Factory Encores are designed for centerfire cartridges only.  Ed
