Baiting Grizzlies
« on: February 17, 2005, 09:10:18 PM »
There is a proposal in to allow us to shoot grizzlies over bait in unit 13.  It will go before the game board during the March meeting.  This might get some more people to go there and hunt them.  I know the locals are screaming about the problems they are having with grizzlies.  Last year we were eating lunch on the deck at one of the lodges down there and a grizzlie decided to join us for lunch.  Most of the people present were tourist and were scrambling to get inside, and the door was not big enough to let them inside fast enough.  The owners son came out with his rifle and shot it, as it was coming up the steps.

I'd give it a try for sure. I'm not sure where I would put a station up though.

If the price was not so high for a Guide fee I would go and shoot them. Being a non-resident it would cost me well over $10,000 to shoot one.    I think I need to move to Alaska.  :-D

Sourdough,

I wish you guys luck with that baiting proposal in 13, as I understand the moose population has long been suffering- at the expense of predators.

I also agree with Redhawk 1, but we both know that the laws on guided nonres grizz hunting will never change (ever).

This all sorta reminds me of fish & game dropping the wolf tag from $175 down to $25. Good move (7 for the price of one) ha ha

Anyway, I can only imagine what the anti's of this baiting proposal are gonna be saying (truth stretching?) about it. Should be interesting. Please keep us updated.

Oh The Friends Of Animals are real upset.  But they are keeping a low profile here since they know 98% of our population are against them.  If they were to set up a booth and try to get signatures here in Fairbanks they would only be informing the public that did not know about the new proposal.  They might get a dozen signatures, and half would be Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck.

The local rep priscilla (something) has not said a word here but I'm sure they are saying a lot in Connicut their home base.  I would not be surprised if they did not try and get a bill through congress about baiting Grizzlies.  And here we got them running out our ears in unit 13.  And they are getting numerous in unit 20-A where I hunt.  A resident is allowed one a year there.

Sourdough:  Do you know when the meeting is and who will be there?  Maybe we can start a little letter writing campaign to help move this along.

Maybe the Anti's would have better luck getting up a proposal to stop vehicles on our hwys in the winter, They changed the sign by my house to 312 moose killed this winter on the roads.

The meeting will be March 4th thru march 11th.  In Anchorage.  Right off the top of my head I can't remember the address to send them to.  Your local Dept F&G should know, I'll try and find the address and post it.  Rog
