Dear Quickdtoo:
Last Sunday ypu posted an answer to a post and provided a picture of 22 mag, 17 HMR, 22 Stinger, 17 Stinger, and 17lr ,22lr.
Please explain 17lr vs 17m2. Can either be used in the same chamber like 22lr?
I havn't seen either rifle or ammo yet in my neighborhood, so I'm still learnin. I think it would be great for squirrels! Woodbutcher

The 17Lr which was never a production caliber as far as I know, it evolved into the 17Aguilla with a 20gr bullet. The 17 Aguilla can be fired in a 17Mach2 chamber, but not the other way around. The 17Mach2 is a necked down 22 stinger case which is .10" longer than a standard 22Lr case. The 17M2 is said to be a better squirrel round because it's slower than the 17hmr round at less than 2100fps, same bullet though, but is just as accurate and flat shooting within about 100yds or a bit more. Since the 17M2 and Aguilla are .172 caliber, it wouldn't shoot very well in the .221 bore of a 22Lr. IIRC, the 17 Aguilla round velocity is about 1800fps.

Gee, I might even imagine the 17m2 as the ultimate 100 yd squirrel rifle. Please notice thats me imagining. Benchresting and field conditions are two different things, and a squirrel gets awful small out there. They must shrink somehow! Truth is I usually don't even see em till they're a lot closer.
I guess it's the accuracy that I've read about on this forum that really gets my attention. The 22rf is the workhorse, but something that is flatter shooting, longer range, and same or better accuracy in a field grade rifle, well, I guess ya can't help but take notice.
NOT to overlook the 17HMR, any comparisons between 17s and 22s, ect. have been answered very thoroughly, ie, get em both. Very sensible!
Now the old Mossberg 22 still works fine, it's been around for a while, shot a lot of groundhogs, CCI Stingers, open sights, still huntin, maybe 30-40 yds. in the woods and edges. No need to replace it. But something that cuts a finer line would be great for squirrels. Groundhogs too!
There's a lot to be learned on this site, and with the help of the many fine gentlemen here, I'm learnin how to make a good decision and you've all helped me understand that I need one of these rifles! Now, a bit of education about proper selection of optics for such a rifle, is in order.

Welcome aboard!!

The 17LR became the 17Aguila but with a 20gr FMJ bullet. You will also see the .17PMC which is just another name for the .17 Aguila.

Thanks for the fast reply and info. What I'm looking for is specifics on the .17LR Remington rimfire. What year it was introduced, grains of the bullet, fps and why it didn't get off the ground. BTW, where did you get one of those cartridges and where can I find some myself?

Sorry, :oops: ....that's all I know about it, I'm not sure that it was ever in production, the pic is from RFC, you might check them out and ask over there. Chief Dave is the one that posted that pic.

I've been busting Prairie Dogs out to 100 + yards with the 17 Mach 2 and it has been real consistant....bang-flop. Great little round. Most fun I've had with my cloths on in a long time.
