Tikka ring question
« on: February 17, 2005, 09:32:41 AM »
A new T-3 Lite recently followed me home, and I am looking at putting a 50mm objective
scope on this rifle.  As of now it has a 40mm scope that I use as a "floater", for
new rifle break-in, until I decide on what I really want on the gun.  I have decided on
a 50mm scope, and am wondering if the Tikka rings will handle a 50mm objective.
I will probably switch them out, eventually, so a second question is which height
rings would give the 50mm objective scope clearance?  High?  Extra High?  Incidentally, the
two ring brand choices that I am currently looking at are, Leupold(Sako style), and Warne.

Thanks in advance for any info you may provide.

I am looking at my Tikka T3 in .300WSM with factory rings and a Zeiss Conquest 3x-9x-40mm right now and I can tell you that a 50mm scope won't fit with the factory rings.

As far as which ring height to get, that really all depends on the scope mount manufacturer.  On my T3, if the rings don't hold up, then I'm going to get the Talley rings.  Just go to their website, or even call them, and find out what size those particular rings will fit 50mm scopes.

I believe Tikka states that their rings will clear nothing larger than a 42mm objective scope.

Tikka Rings

Thanks all for the replies.

I finally put the Tikka Whitetail Hunter(M695) next to the T-3 last night, and it is all
too clear now that the factory rings aren't nearly high enough.  Using the Millett
rings, on the WH as a guide, which are "High" rings, there looks to be about .2" of
clearence, according to my dial caliber, for the 44mm Nikon scope on that rifle.
By my ciphering, I will have .080 cleareance, with "high" rings, and a 50mm
objective.  So I guess "High" will do it, if "high" is a consistent height between brands.

I will probably go with Warne rings.  I have them on an AR-15, a Savage Striker,
and on a Encore, and have had excellent service out of them.  They are the only
rings that I found that would hold the Burris scope down, on my violent recoiling
.308 Win chambered Savage Striker(No muzzle break).  I went through just about
every manufacturer of rings, including Leupold, and Burris Signature Zee rings,
and the scope kept slowly rotating on shots.  Three Warne Maximas finally anchored
the scope. So since that adventure, I have been purchasing Warne rings for most
of my new scope mounts.

Thanks again.

Squeeze,

Checkout (TJ Store.com), I had the same problem and found the rings needed for my 56mm scope. The rings are made in finland and are excellent.

I don't like the mounts that came with my T3 either.  I just got the following email back from Leupold this morning.

The Tikka T-3 accepts the Tikka Whitetail Hunter standard style mount
base.  STD Whitetail Hunter 2-piece Gloss base, part #54447.

Fella's;

Tallley makes bases & rings.  Talked to Dave & he sent out a set to mount a 50mm VXIII Leupold on my Tikka.  Haven't actually done it yet as the stock is getting a recoil pad fitted now.  However, I don't have much doubt the man knows what he is talking about.

Take a look at the Warne European rings for the Tikka, at Brownells.  There is a long post on the forum about them, just a few posts back.  They mount right to the dovetail receiver on the gun - Real tough rings.  I'll post pics tomorrow.  Leupold does not make anything for the Tikka, or i'd have em on my gun with my Leupold VX3 3.5x10x40mm.  Stay away from the Burris signature rings with the pos-align inserts, bad experiences with this gun.   :D
