What length action will a 375 H&H fit in? Will it work in a action like the standard magnum calibers like 300win mag and 7mm rem mag?
What rifles actions does savage make that would except this round. I noticed that midway has 375 H&H barrels on sale for $99

The .375 H&H will fit in a 700 Remington long action because Remington doesn't but a baffle, or spacer, in the back of the magazine box; therefore you have about 3.6" of magazine length to use. The Winchester Model 70 action is long enough, but generally Winchester puts a spacer in the back of the magazine box so you wind up with only 3.4" useable magazine. To make it long enough for the .375 H&H, you need to cut out the spacer and shorten the ejector and bolt stop or, you can order the magazine box, bolt stop, and ejector for the .375 H&H Model 70 from the USRAC parts catalog. I've done it both ways and it works. In both cases, Winchester and Remington, you of course need a magnum (.532") bolt face.

Hey Brass,

.375 HH is a magnum length action. The 300 win and 7mm are all on a long 30-06 length action. The 375HH is too long for the Savage action.

Sorry "brasskeeper" but Doug is right. Notice where it says "Action: Long.", that stands for a long or "magnum" length action. Savage made a special run of long actions just for the .375 H&H. There is a noticable difference when put side by side to a 116 Savage in .338 WM, which we did. I almost bought one of those 116 Savages when I was looking for a .375 H&H for the wife. I got her a Ruger M77 instead. She doesn't like stainless either. Lawdog

Hi Guys,

I went through the same gyrations a few years ago. I had the chance to buy zastava mauser barrelled actions (Whitworth) for $320 each. No one wanted them because they were from Yugoslavia or CZ. I didn't care....Whitworths were/are good guns. I finally settled on a rem BDLSS because they are lite, can be tricked out and I'm not all that convinced that CF is all that necessary, IMHO. I did trick it out, timney trigger, magnaport, limbsaver pad, etc, etc and it's just what I want. winchester actions are also wonderful if you like them, I don't though I can't figure out why. I once read that if you move the bolt stop back on a ruger 77 you could fit a .375 length cartridge, but, I've measured the magazine and it's way too short. The Ruger 77 magnum is large enough, though too heavy for my tastes. I like a .375 to weight about 8ish pounds. If I'm going to carry a 9 or 10 lb gun, I'll move up to .416.

Anyway...for me the fun is in the planning!!!!

Thanks everybody for the info. I would like to have a rfile in 375 but most rifles I have seen start about $1000.00. I was looking for a cheaper option and the $100.00 savage barrels looked like the way to go. Im not looking for a wall hanger or a safari rifle. I would like to find a well used rifle to tinker with.

Hi Brass,

Keep looking. Post-64 Winchesters can be had in .375 for about 500 - 700 used. I bought one made in 1972 from a large gun shop in Kittery ME for $375 and resold it a couple of years later for $500. Seems most folks could not get past the push feed action on a Winchester...but...it worked just fine. Also, look for a Whitworth. They can usually be had for under $1,000.
