325wsm or a 35 whelen

My dad is talking about a new rifle and he is undecided about which
one to get. But during our talk about rifles he said something about the new 325 wsm I said something about the 35 whelen.Just looking for suggestions on either. I know the 35 has been around awhile and the other is new. He has 4 30/06 (yes 4). I think he wants a bolt gun
and I'm just trying to help him get what he would be the happiest with.
There were other calibers tossed into our talk but these 2 came up more than anything else.

I'd have to go whelen on this one.  I have a whelen and it is an excellent big game rifle.  It is probably the most underrated cartridge out there.  The 325 won't do anything that a 300 win or 338 win won't do, and the 8mm has never been very popular in the US.  The whelen is time tested and feild proven, everyone should have one.

Who else but the Alaskans would be answering posts this late.

I have to vote for the Whelen too.

Unless:  Browning comes out with the BLR in stainless and the .325.  I have seen adds for the guns but nothing on the Browning site.

I was gonna ask if he handloads but I won't because it probably doesn't matter. In a few short years the .325 will probably be pretty hard to find in factory ammo so you'll need to handload it, also. I would go for the Whelen myself but I am partial to the 30-06 and cartridges derived from it. It sounds like he feels the same way about the cartridge.

What will he be hunting ? Short range big game the 35 -06. Long range big game 325 WSM (8MM). Take a look at the reloading data for the 325WSM and compare it with the 35-06. The 35-06 is a good old round but not the energy as the 325 WSM.

I think he just wants a new toy since he has 4 30/06's and one of them
is the 742 i believe. and the whelen to me would do the trick

I would like to have a stainless but my blued Ruger will really do the trick.  I just put a hogue overmolded stock for my ruger.  It is a lot more comfortable than the skeletonized hard rubber/plastic stock that my whelen came with.   Makes shooting the heavier loads a lot more pleasant.

thanks guys for the input 35 whelen it is now which model remington
ruger etc i like the remington cdl so far and myself am considering on handloading sometime soon as soon as i have a place and the tools to do that.

Since yall are getting into stuff that is going to have to be reloaded (35 Whelen) or soon to be reloaded (325 WSM)...  Why not expand the search?

Weatherby makes one heck of a nice 338-06...  The 180 grain ballistic tip is a stone cold killer on deer/antelope sized game.

A 338 Winchester or 340 Weatherby would be one heck of a rifle.

Or you can go with the best of the 35 cals, the one that has the ballistics that the 35 Whelen guys wished they had, the 358 Norma Mag.

PS.  I had a custom built 8mm Remington for a couple of years.  The bullet selection really sucked.

I have a fancy for both the .338-06 and the .35 Whelen, but given that our choices are between the whelen and the 325WSM, I would vote for the Whelen.  Remington now chambers the .35 Whelen in their CDL, and it looks really nice.

As far as factory ammo goes, God only knows what will happen to the .325WSM in 5 or 10 years.  The whelen,  on the other hand, while not popular by any strech of the imagination, still has a constant and predictable demand.
