Was up at the sportman's show this weekend and got a look at the Remington 700 Mountain Rifle with SS barrel and laminated stock. The one I was looking at was chambered for 270, but I was thinking one chambered in 260 Remington would make a nice set up for Blacktail deer.

Anybody care to comment on this idea, both the rifle and the cartridge?:?

I've never shot, or even seen for that matter, a black tail deer but I think you have an excellent idea. That would have to be a dandy piece.
I had a .243 rebarrelled to a .260 this year and shot a couple of white tails with it. I was shooting 140gr Rem Core Lokt bullets @2600fps (I never Chronied the load) and it did a number on the ones I shot.
If I were to leave tomorrow on a mulie hunt, I think I'd leave my tried and trusted 7-08 at home and take a .260

I was looking a t a Ruger M77 in 260. A real light and handy rifle. Plan on getting one this summer.

I have three of them including the .260 Rem. I've not shot that one much as it's the newest. So I've yet to make up my mind about the cartridge. But I love my 7-08 and the '06. The 7-08 is my primary hunting rifle. My '06 took a bit of work but after bedding the action it quickly became an MOA and less rifle with most loads. The 7-08 shot that way right out of the box but I went ahead and bedded the action anyway.

I've kinda got the okay to start looking for rifles for the grand kids. This caught my eye. I wouldn't mind having one in 270 but I thought if I started the kids out with the 260 it might be a bit easier on them than a 270 in this light of a rifle. I'd probably try and cook up a decent load with the 125 grain Nosler Partition for the little black tails around here.
Probably won't happen for a couple of years. but thought I'd hit you guys up as I most often get good information from this site.

reloader, excellent idea and a excellent choice. Get the model 7 with a standard stock and then get a cadet stock (or some aftermarket mattel plastic stock that you wouldn't mind butchering on) from Midway (I think). The length of pull on the cadet stock is shorter so better to fit a kid and then as they grow you can return the standard stock to the rifle. Also, until the kids start shooting, you can use the rifle yourself. :lol:
