help picking out a new rifle
« on: February 13, 2005, 12:34:38 PM »
i can not decide what to get. i will mainly use one for coyote dogging where you need to swing the gun out of the truck so i do not want a long or heavy barrel. i cant decide bettween a 223 204 and a 22-250. i will take shots from 25yrds to as far as the gun can. i have considered remington mod 7, a savage lighter model, winchester coyote, tikka. And i DO NOT CARE ABOUT HOW BIG THE HOLE IN THE FUR IS. i will appreciate all you guys inpute and info thanks.

I have a Handi rifle in 243, a Rossi single shot in 223 and a Thompson Encore in 204 Ruger. All are short and very handy rifles. Prefer the 204 Ruger caliber by far. Also have a Ruger  M77 in 22-250, good rifle , but longer and heavier.

Model 7 in 22-250 for the extra reach over a .223.  If not, the get the .223.  Lotsa brass, lotsa components.  Or lotsa surplus ammo for sale.

First, I think the .22-250 is best in a longer (and heavy) barrel. Otherwise you lose to much of the round's potential. For your use, the .223 or .204 seems to be a better choice. Consider the CZ 527. The detachable magazine makes it a great truck gun. Look around at some of the posts here, nothing but good reviews on it. I have the American model, and if they stopped making it, you wouldn't get me to part with it if you gave me a pickup full of model 7's.

Get a TC Encore, and a barrel in each of the calibers you're considering.  Shoot them all.  Whichever you like best, that's the one to keep!!!  :)

Do you have a need for a follow up shot?  If so the single shots are not for you.  On the other hand, I would much rather have an inexpensive single shot (NEF) in 223 banging around in my truck than some far more expensive bolt action.  Spend the extra money on a better scope.  Oh, if you don't care how big a hole you put in the hide, consider a 243 or 6 mm.  Longer reach and more hit. Not much kick.

Handi rifle in .223 is the way to go. The previous advice about a good scope is right on. Put a bipod on it, when you shoot off the hood on those long shots you connect.

My opinion,

I think a short barreled Rem. Model 7 would be an excellent platform for your proposed rifle. So might the Handi rifle as suggested. With a single shot you can get more barrel for the same over all length. But to me the ideal would be a Rem. Model 7 chambered to the 6 TCU or the 6mm-223 which is ballistically identical and differs mostly in shoulder angle. With it you can push 6MM 65 grain V-Max bullets as fast as the .223 can push 50s due to the better expansion ratio. It would easily do in coyotes as far as you can hit them.

One of these days I'm gonna put me one of these together. I'd really love to have one of those older TCR83 or 87 rifles so chambered.
