You know it really ticks me off to have the place I like to fish trashed up by these morons that have no respect for you or the water your on. I limb and trotline mostly, and I make it a point to be sure that I retrieve ALL my lines and I also cut down any lines I find that have been deserted. I carry a trash bag in my boat and not only put my trash in it but also any debris I find whether some moron threw it out or it washed down the river. The jug fishing craze of a couple of years ago had the river littered with everything imaginable that would float and had a place to tie a line and of course these "responsible" (not) fishers had not labeled any of this paraphanalia with their name address lic.# etc. It makes your fishing trip more enjoyable when you don't think your fishing at the dump...Prime example, my fishing partner and I went to an area on the river here where we used to camp and fish, it had been a couple of years since we had been there so we decided to go and camp for the weekend. When we got to that section of the river and to the area that the campsite was at, it was discusting.There was trash up and down the river jugs and god knows how many deserted limb and trotlines, it was so bad we couldn't even camp and was about half afraid to fish. We decided that we would come back on sunday and see if we could make a difference in the situation. We started up the river with our cajun we fish out of and towing a empty john boat. We worked all day sunday and hauled all the trash and other rubbish we picked up back in the john boat and disposed of it properly, it took 2 weekends to get it all cleaned up but since we have noticed that alot more people are enjoying the area now....

Am I a racist if I say that the good folks of certaqin cultures take advantage of the recreational fishing oppportunities present in many of our states. I don't care what kind ,or size of fish, if it gets on their hook, it goes in their freezer. I worry that I'm being a racist because they literally destroy the area's they fish. Used baby diapers, beerboxes,bottles,anything that can be dragged down to the shore. But, the white trash natives were doing this long before we really became such a melting pot. The thing is I don't remember the bad apples of the white trash brigade ever turning the public recreation areas into landfills like the latin trash, and the asian trash brigades have. I don't want to discriminate but once somone from one of these groups fins an easily accessed fishing hole you can kiss it good-bye, it will be a fished out trash hole from then on.

Now you got my attention! I fish at a lake where you put in and take out from shore with public access. There is no launch fee...yet, so very little maintainance is provided (Corp lake). There are trash barrels, but they get little use. I have seen everything from diapers, feminine products, and beer cartons to house hold garbage scattered around. Like you, my wife and I carry an ample supply of trash bags in the boat. We collect floating trash from the water, and pick up what we can from the shoreline.
I also make it a point to be very obvious when walking to, and placing trash INSIDE the barrels, lots of folks just throw it toward the barrels.
One thing I do every so often, I stop by the Corp office and request trash bags. They know me well enough now to trust that I am putting the bags to good use and they appreciate the help. Keep up the good work!

There ya go...pick it up. I too see folks trash out local fishing holes and ramp areas, but I've never been able to put a particular race with the problem...in fact here close to home where I launch my jon boat off a county road, it's about all white folk.

My neighbor has used the launch area for as long as I can remember....he's in his 80's and I'm just a pup in my 50's...it never bothered him to wade through trash to get to his boat, but it does me, so I clean the area up every spring which usually nets me a 55 gallon barrel full of beer cans, wine bottles, pop bottles and bait containers.

It's not just the hillbillies either.......I know a rather nice fella, a cop from a nearby town, and I found him and his dad fishing one afternoon a few springs ago, one of those days when it's almost completely calm, with a string of crap...bottles, wrappers, etc were strung out from the side of their boat to about 75 yards down wind...looked like crap, and he would probably have ticketed somebody for littering if they were tossing that out of their automobile windows.

I figured they were surprised that anyone else was around to see them.

It's not just at the fishing holes either. A few years ago I took my son to a management area to hunt. It's a habit of mine to pick up trash when ever I see it and I've taught my son ( now 16) to do the same. When we got home the bed was full to a depth about 2 cans deep. the biggest problem was as far as I was concerned was that most of them were beer cans, in an area where beer is not allowed. I haven't hunted there since.
